CALDER: Teemu Selanne 250 (50-0-0); Joe Juneau 75 (0-18-21); Felix Potvin 63 (0-15-18); Eric Lindros 61 (0-17-10); Vladimir Malakhov 1 (0-0-1)
Selanne had FIFTY first place votes and the rest didn't have one single vote..

Gota love the finnish flash. That choice was a no-brainer. Yet, people in the Northeast US (Boston, in particular), were very vocal about how the NHL completely overlooked Juneau (ya right!)

I think it was Adam Oates back in the day who said,
"Selanne couldn't carry Joey Juneau's jockstrap."
One of the all time most ridiculous statements, ever.

that year the nhl rookies were extremely good. there were probably about at least 5 of the rookies that would have won the calder any other given year.

Nope 132 points, 76 goals and 56 assists. At 54 goals he beat Mike Bossy's Rookie Scoring Record

That was amazing.... he beat Gretzky's record right??? gretzky had 137 points in his first year in the nhl, but the league ruled he wasn't a rookie as he played in the wha the prior season (as a 17 year old). selanne's 132 points broke peter stastny's "rookie" record of 109 points.

I'd say 5 points within Gretzky's record would still be VERY respectable.

my thinking is:
dale hawerchuk scored 103 points as an 18 year old rookie, while mario lemieux only scored 100 in his first year, as a late birth year 19 year old.
stastny was 24 in his rookie year, and selanne was 22.
ducky is the 2nd highest scoring 18 year old in NHL history, so really, if the record doesn't belong to gretzky, it should belong to him.
just my opinion.

Nope 132 points, 76 goals and 56 assists. At 54 goals he beat Mike Bossy's Rookie Scoring Record Selanne didn't just break the record, he annihilated it! Just like Gretzky's 215 point season, Howe's 1809 games played, and Gretzky's 50 goals in 39 games, this record will never be touched!

"Gretzky's 50 goals in 39 games, this record will never be touched"
You're right, players nowadays can't even score 50 goals in a season let alone 50 goals in 39 games.

Joe Juneau rookie season was good JUST because of Adam Oates was having the season of his career..I dont know why Oates complained that Selanne won the Calder when Selanne LED his team in goals and points and for FIRST year players..

Gota love the finnish flash. That choice was a no-brainer. Yet, people in the Northeast US (Boston, in particular), were very vocal about how the NHL completely overlooked Juneau (ya right!) At least any area hockey writers (those who vote for the Calder) had the sense to vote Selanne with their first votes.

Actually, he beat Bossy's "goal scoring record" of 53 with 76 of his own. And, he then beat Stastny's "point scoring record" of 109 when he finished with 132.
