The Hockey News put out a "Best of Everything" issue in 2003 I believe. In it, they have each team's All-Time Teams and 2nd All-Time Teams. They list making the selections in this way: "Correspondants in each NHL city came up with proposed teams in consultation with local experts. In some cases, THN had to trump those decisions based on the list we created for 1997's "The Top 100 NHL Players of All-Time." Also included were all-time statistics, best and worst seasons and moments, best draft year and fans' choices for most popular players.
Winnipeg/Phoenix's teams looked like this (keeping in mind this is only NHL):
All-Time Team:
Dale Hawerchuk - Voted Best Player Ever
Teemu Selanne
Keith Tkachuk
Teppo Numminen
Fredrik Olausson
Nikolai Khabibulin
coached by Bob Francis
2nd Team:
Paul MacLean
Thomas Steen
Doug Smail
Randy Carlyle
Dave Babych
Sean Burke
What strikes me as most... disappointing(?) is that Bob Essensa didn't make that list. Was Sean Burke better for Phoenix than Essensa was for the Jets of the late 80s, early 90s?
Also interesting was their choice for best season ever: 2001-02, a 40-27-9-6 season for 95 points. They did garner 33 points in 23 games after the Olympic break, making the playoffs (another first round loss for the franchise) with a relatively young, no-name roster, but were they better than the 84-85 Jets, a team that has the franchise record for the most wins, points and goals in a season, as well as a first round win and a league-record 6 30-goal scorers and a 130 point campaign by Hawerchuk.
Anyone else have this issue? Thoughts, comments?
