Brett Hull playing for the Coyotes. Give it up already.
So I hear that they (Phoenix) are "un-retiring" Bobby Hull's number so he can wear it. Thats absolutley Go Jets Go. What a joke.
No. 9 was retired by the WINNIPEG JETS, not the phoenix coyotes.
Quote from another board (Guytarr) "Brett Hull has never worn #9 as a pro, so why now? Phoenix is not a Hockey city and never will be. This is a feeble attempt at drawing attention to a hockey team that nobody in Arizona cares about. Most of the people in Phoenix have never heard of Brett Hull let alone Bobby Hull. This publicity stunt draws attention to what is wrong with the NHL today."
Man am I pi*sed off.

Who gives a sh-- what they do in Phoenix, anymore.
Just think. Once we get the Jets (or, whatever they'll be called) back, we'll also have something we didn't have when we were in the NHL the first time.
A natural rival.

I am suprised that they honor any of the retired Jet numbers in Phoenix at all actually. (Although they claim Bobby Hull was signed in downtown PHOENIX in 1972 dispite the fact that Robbie Ftorek`s number is still retired statewide, no explanation as to the Roadrunners history there...) In Brett`s case, I am okay with him wearing it as it was his father`s number and I don`t doubt that Bobby had some influence in the Yotes allowing him to wear it. If Tkancer got to wear it, I would be on the first flight to Phoenix with plans to blow up their arenas...

Another thing to consider on Brett`s part is the reason why he never wore number 9 anywhere else:
1) In Calgary the most beloved Flame of all, Lanny MacDonald wore that number and Brett wore Bobby`s other number that he wore in All Star s and in his early years in Chicago, (and his brief stay in Hartford as well,) number 16.
2) When Brett moved on to St. Louis, number 9 was taken by none other than Dougie Gilmour so again, he wore his dad`s alternate number, 16.
3) Next stop; Dallas. Number 9 was retired by 1998, (Neil Broten,) and number 16 was taken so Brett went with number 22. (Although he went back to 16 as soon as it became available.)
4) On to Detroit. Gee, I wonder why he didn`t wear number 9 there... What rhymes with Mr. Hockey? Also, number 16 was also taken so he used 17 instead.
5) On to Phoenix and while #9 is also retired there, Brett has the inside track with the guy who`s name is up in the rafters so it was finally legitimately possible for Brett to wear Bobby`s number. This isn`t an insult to Winnipeg as much as it is Brett paying tribute to his dad at the very end of his career.
