Trough golden opportunity?
'Legendary' Arena urinal up for auction
By DAVID SCHMEICHEL, STAFF REPORTER
Power 97 program director Lochlin Cross wants to see some long lineups when his station auctions off a piece of local history next month. You might say he'd like to see a steady stream of bidders. You could even say he's hoping to be showered in bids.
The auction item Cross will be putting on the block? The infamous urinal trough once found in the men's washroom of the old Winnipeg Arena.
POTTY HUMOUR
Potty humour aside, Cross is pretty confident the trough -- or at least the six feet he's auctioning -- will prove a big-ticket item.
"That damn trough ... it's legendary," Cross laughed. "It is a very tongue-in-cheek item, but as much as we're doing it for comedy, I totally believe there'll be a lot of people interested in it."
Cross recently bought the trough from arena owners Winnipeg Enterprises, and plans to sell it to the highest bidder during his station's Twelve Hours of Christmas Auction on Dec. 17.
Every hour for 12 hours, an item or set of items will be auctioned off to raise money for Skate Park West, a community organization raising funds for a $300,000 skate park being built at the corner of Sturgeon Road and Silver Avenue.
Items up for grabs include season tickets for the Blue Bombers and the Moose, game packages courtesy of the Goldeyes and a trip for two to Niagara Falls to see Collective Soul on New Year's Eve.
But the trough will probably generate the most interest and the most laughs -- especially since it figures so prominently in at least half the population's memories of the old barn.
Cross plans to pair the trough with a couple of seats that have been removed from the arena.
