Does anyone know if 1290 is going to get more Canadian content? I had thought they were going to be branded as TSN radio but that looks like it's just for the Toronto market. I just can't stand Mike and Mike and all the basketball coverage, even if it means listening to endless talk of the Leafs just so hockey gets mentioned.

The only thing I listen to on 1290 is H&L. Everything else is basically cheap American filler.

I'll listen to Jim Rome when he's on, and I don't mind Mike & Mike in the morning, but ONLY during NFL season. I CAN'T STAND listening to anything to do with MLB/NBA/NCAA. I would much rather listen to some airhead in TO go on and on about the Leafs than listen to some American go on and on about how the Ohio State vs. Michigan game is going to blah blah blah, I'm getting bored just typing about it.

1290 wont be long for this market. CJOB is already a pseudo sports station and have the Bombers and soon-to-have the NHL as well.
I think H&L gambled and lost when they jumped ship.

cjob will probably get the rights... They can reach more people because of their bigger transmitter. CFRW just doesn't have the range.

I'm sure it will be CJOB.

Winnipeg NEEDS an all-sports station. All the major Canadian cities of importance have one and have plenty of dedicated listeners. Winnipeg is fast becoming a major sports city in Canada and cannot afford to be without one.

Sports radio is not exactly a ratings killer... it's a niche product outside of live play by play broadcasts for popular home teams. We have 1290 which is all sports, and CJOB has a heavy dose of sports too (Moose previously, and Bombers). I think we'll be OK.

Someone a while back made reference that if CJOB gets the broadcasting rights, then that would kill the local sports station. Well, I'm not liking that possibility. We are a major centre in this country, and as such, need a sports radio station to fill that niche market. Losing it would be losing a part of the quality of life this city has to offer to sports fans.

If anyone misses all of the ESPN filler about college baseball and NASCAR that we'd lose if 1290 dropped sports, I have two words: SATELLITE RADIO

Corus which owns CJOB is one of the teams big sponsors if I am not mistaken. Some people on here have a hate on for CJOB they are likely going to have those rights. H & L didn't make a mistake, they will still have great access to the team and be able to put on a great show.

Whats the difference between the all sports 1290 and CJOB? CJOB fills the sports need in Winnipeg, especially in the past few months as they have upped their content.
Once they have the NHL deal, they have both major sports in Winnipeg as well as local shows every evening. Wouldnt surprise me to see them add a two hour block on the weekend as well.
Compared to 1290, CJOB has far more local sports coverage.
