www.montrealgazette.com/business/Molson+Coors+sponsorship+deal+with+overturned/4901638/story.htmlMONTREAL - Molson Coors brewery has suffered a stunning defeat in the legal arena in its bid to become the official beer of the NHL. Four months after Molson and the NHL announced a lucrative seven-year deal for exclusive league rights in the beer sponsorship category, to take effect in the 2011-12 season, an Ontario judge has ruled the NHL already had a deal in place through 2014 with Labatt Breweries, the official sponsor for more than a decade. Labatt had indicated at the time the Molson deal went public that it would contest, contending its negotiations with the league already had produced an agreement on terms for renewal through 2014. “Budweiser and hockey are a natural fit. We look forward to a very productive relationship with the league through the 2013-14 season,” Labatt vice-president of corporate affairs Charlie Angelakos said in a statement. Molson and the league said they’ll appeal. “We are disappointed with Judge (Frank) Newbould’s ruling given we entered into negotiations with the NHL in good faith,” said Dave Perkins, president and chief executive officer of Molson Coors Canada. “While Friday’s ruling was an unfortunate surprise, we remain committed to doing all we can to keep this sponsorship agreement in place with the NHL.” Bill Daly, deputy commissioner of the NHL, said the league disagrees with the judgment “and we plan to pursue an appeal of the ruling on an expedited basis.”

Since Labatt is the official beer sponsor, I decree that each rink should serve delicious Labatt 50.

lol, I like a 50 as much as the next guy, but this is big money legal mumbo jumbo going on here. All very interesting, as I have no clue why the NHL went this direction in the first place. Strange way to do business.
