In NHL 2005 I love how you have to negotiate player contracts and set up practice schedules etc... To bad you can't play as the jets though.

The ESPN NHL 2k5 is a far superior video game for the PS2 / XBox. It has a swarm of heritage teams from the original 6, to all the defunct teams, and the challenges are awesome. One challenge, "Beat the 2001 Phoenix Coyotes with the 1996 Winnipeg Jets" Done and Done the one I'm working on right now? "Beat the Detroit Red Wings by 3 goals with the Pittsburgh Penguins"

I have both NHL 2k5 and NHL 2005. NHL 2K5 is better in certain areas because it has way more stats, records and user stats. It also seems to have a deeper franchise mode with different options and features, such as actual farm teams, and the schedule and stats of the farm team. All that stuff with the NHL heritage teams in NHL 2k5 is useless, the only players on those teams that are real are current NHLers, the rest of the players are named defence1, defence2, defence3, centre1, leftwing1 etc.... If you play with the 1955 Canadiens there is no Maurice Richard, instead there is forward1 wearing number 9. You could easily make a similar if not better team in EA's create a team. Until they actually have the real players names, stats and faces I won't care about NHL 2k5's heritage teams. A retro logo, and numbers on the back of the jerseys does not make heritage teams.
I like NHL2005 more because I've been playing the EA game since NHL96. I also like because it's more user friendly and easier to pick up and play. Next year I really hope they improve the Franchise mode, get rid of the crazy hitting and bring back the NHL stats screen and possibly user stats.

For legal reasons (The contract they signed with the NHLPA) they aren't allowed to list the names of former players (and the EA game doesn't do this either) However, there's supposedly a way to rename the players. It really doesn't bother me that much. I mean, it doesn't take much away from the experience to have the name left off of a #99 sweater in the great Oilers dynasty. I played the EA version but I thought it was more difficult to control, whereas 2k5 I picked up right away. EA's game there is WAY too much checking going on and it's hard to put a damn play together. Also that open ice interface is clunky. Both good games, but everything pales next to my old copy of Blades of Steel.

I own NHL 2k5 for PS2 and I like it better than NHL 2005 because I think the gameplay for 2K5 is better than NHL 2005, but I do not enjoy the bugs in the game that make it freeze while playing in franchise mode . And you can rename those no name players by going to the roster menu and edit the player *meeeeh* . The game has all the names programmed into it...for example I edited Dale Hawerchuks player for the '94 Sabres and when you play with him in gameplay the commentators say their names which is pretty neat. They have sites on the internet that give you the heritage teams player rosters and lineups for those 2K5 hardcores.

NHL 2K5 has better gameplay than NHL 2005, and yes the AI hitting is just ridiculous in NHL 2005. But I adjust to the gameplay and it becomes fun because it's a challenge. And even though the franchise mode is not that deep I like it because it's much easier to handle and control. I think NHL 2k5 franchise mode is too overwhelming, and some of the stuff is unecessary. Hopefully EA improves on their franchise mode, because that's the only reason I buy the game. If they don't make any good improvements I won't be buying NHL 2006.
You're right though, nothing beats blades of steel for the NES. I liked it when there was a fight and if you knocked a player out you would get a powerplay because the player was injured.

I got NHL 2005 for the PC for Christmas and I'm addicted to it. I love playing online - my nickname is WinnipegsJet and I've been spreading the word about the campaign in the chatrooms. Plus I play as the Pheonix Coyotes (ugh) only so that I can wear the old Jets jerseys. Anyone else that has it for the PC come online and look for WinnipegsJet and challenge me!
NEWSFLASH: there won't be an NHL 2006 -um what season would they base it on?

Of course there will be an NHL 2006, ea won't just toss the title this year because there is no hockey. That would be like Sherwood or CCM or someone not making hockey sticks because there is no hockey. It's a seperate business. Personally I hate EA sports, they have no consistancy. One year is great, the next year is Go Jets Go, the year after is bare, the following is amazing. NHL 2005 had so many bugs and so many features taken out it was a complete waste of time and money. I regret buying it and should of saved my $100 and stuck with NHL 2004.

I payed $50 something for the game and because NHL 2005 doesn't work with the same controllers NHL 2004 did, and those logitech dual actions are P.O.S, I had to go and buy another controller. Another $45ish logitech controller which broke in 3 days.
