If and when an NHL franchise is brought to Winnipeg, what happens with the naming rights of the arena? Clearly MTS would no longer have their name attached to it, as MTS only serves Manitoba, and are not a big enough fish to endorse an NHL arena. I imagine their naming rights are tied into an AHL franchise, correct me if I am wrong. Would Chipman and co. tender for a new sponsor to the arena? What is the value of naming rights for an arena? Being Winnipeg, my first inclination is that we could probably attract a brewery as a sponsor, how does Molson Centre sound, on the contingency that we get a brewery, a.k.a as jobs in compensation. Or if we maintain the Jets, how aobut the Boeing Centre? Any thoughts about this?

I beleive it has 3 more years and may very well have a clause where they pay more if an NHL team plays there.

As has been talked about before.
MTS Allstream as it is really known as (Used to be AT&T Canada) is a National Company. All they would have to do is change the name to Allstream or MTS Allstream.
So they could likely have a clause in the contract for money.MTS nets around $100m a year or so I believe.

Even if MTS is not a National Company (and I believe it is, as 22Neufeld28 pointed out in the comment above), I don't think that that forces anyone to change the arena's name.... I think it's a matter of: whoever is willing to pay X amount of dollars for it (or whoever is willing to pay the most) gets the naming rights. Also, I doubt that the arena name could be changed until MTS' current contract with TNSE expires (not sure when that is tho...).

MTS is not really a national company. Their Allstream (or Enterprise) division is not overly successful yet and their primary profits are generated by Manitoba (MTS).
I think MTS loves supporting hockey and TN and loves having their name on the building. There is little need to advertise the MTS brand nationally and across North America and even if they re-branded as MTS Allstream Centre, again, what purpose is there to advertise in the US?
I think it will come down to costs. If they can justify the added expense, they might be inclined.
One thought I had was perhaps giving up the naming rights (WestJet would certainly benefit more from the International exposure) and becoming a major secondary sponsor. They still have their name on the Iceplex and could sponsor a section or a major lounge or something.

The Westjet Hanger will be the new name. Didn't they allready spend their advertizing budget on the parking lot in Glendale?

I always figured MTS was rich enough and would want the naming rights. I'm sure their contract allows them match any offer.

Canad Inns doesnt have nearly enough money nor are they a national brand. It doesn't always have to be a national brand... Edmonton used to be Skyreach Center, and Skyreach is by no means a national company. Same with Pengrowth, which used to have its name on the Saddledome, or St. Pete Times, a newspaper in Tampa-St. Petersburg. Something with a bit of local flavour like Canad Inns (or MTS, or Great-West Life) would be kind of nice instead of something generic like Pepsi or Honda. (The only exception, of course, is IKEA. Winnipeggers would wet their pants over the prospect of a new NHL team playing in the IKEA Centre!)

Sure but the company has to have enough money to afford the naming rights which will be far more for an NHL team than an AHL team or CFL Stadium. A national company can likely justify the cost more as they are getting a larger benefit.
I doubt Canad will even have the naming rights of the new Stadium as I am sure that cost will go up also. Canad has been spread very thin and have cancelled a few projects in the past few years.

For what it's worth, the CEO of MTS had this to say:
What an exciting day for all of us in Winnipeg, and indeed across the country! I am so very pleased about this morning’s announcement by True North Sports & Entertainment that the MTS Centre will now be home to Manitoba’s NHL team.
The return of the NHL is a sure sign that the Manitoba economy is strong, and optimism among Manitobans is on an upswing. I certainly share this enthusiasm, and I know that many of you do as well.
We have been a partner with True North since 2004 when the MTS Centre opened. The downtown Winnipeg sports and entertainment facility that bears our name quickly became one of the busiest and most successful venues in North America, and we are proud to be associated with that success.
Please join me in congratulating True North, the City of Winnipeg, the Province of Manitoba – and passionate hockey fans across the country – for taking the necessary steps that helped bring us to today’s exciting announcement.
