Today's news is stunning... we've been salivating over it for 15 years and FINALLY IT IS OURS!
This one of the biggest Winnipeg news stories of all time... right up there with the General Strike, 1997 Flood and all the other key events.
What is the mood like compared to when the Jets were admitted to the WHA or NHL? Was there the same unbelievable sense of triumph?

Everything was word of mouth and no internet. First were in, then were out, then were Go Jets Go, then were ? It was crazy, just like now, very exciting, but nothing was 100% until everything was signed and delivered and even after that, was still unbelievable. Don't forget we only had a couple local stations and a couple papers to read, which was always a day later.

My dad said that everything they did was last minute. They were at a bar in the country and last minute headed to winnipeg for a game. Dad said that it was always loud and rowdy, when it came to announcements you relied on the news, and nothing more, unless you knew someone that would call and update you. Usually it was heavy rumour ville (remember I am reporting how the country was) and people just met at the bar or someone's house and waited for the news or radio to announce something if there needed to be an announcement of whatever. My dad said the only difference from then and now, is that we have the net. That basically is what I can say.

It was different in both instances. Hearing the news that the Avco champion Jets were going to join the NHL along with Hartford, Edmonton and Quebec was initially terrific. What the NHL then did to the Jets team was just plain nasty. Up and down and bad taste in the mouth. Still, it was pretty exciting to watch the first NHL home game.
When the team left it was serious highs and lows (dammit, find a copy of 'When She's Gone' or download it from stevenerikson.com if you want details on what fans went through!). We felt betrayed, basically. I remember kids showing up at the Forks with piggy banks and jars full of pennies. It was heartbreaking, to be honest.
Now, watched the impromptu celebrations on video clips and couldn't stop smiling and wishing I was there. When the announcement is confirmed, savour the moment, folks. 'When she's gone, she's gone. But she's coming back.'

Oh, and I don't mind being called an old-timer. Sounds almost ... venerated.

But .. well we know what happened.

It wasn't enough though obviously... stupid flyer distributers, they shoulda paid me more!

You know what just came to me, how much more dedication can a city and province have, the small kids giving their piggy bank, thinking that it would help! Now that I think of it, if that isn't love I have no idea what is. I hope my future kids never have to experience this, but you know what, they will have the same affection and loyalty that we did. Amazing. Us little kids probably raised all together a nice hefty penny... and then Susan Thompson took it. BOO

You must have been one strong girl I had a Millennium Falcon piggy bank with $22 in it which I donated to the Save the Jets campaign. Dumb kid!!!! Looking at eBay that piggy bank in mint condition is worth $3000 today to collectors. Now I have a tear in my eye.

Many of those kids who took their piggy banks to the forks will be putting down season ticket deposits now and maybe even taking their own kids to the games...or in good time anyway.
I cant wait for the official party. I hope its huge!!

I was 13 when the Jets joined the NHL. I bought myself a single ticket in the Grey section one of the last rows (from my paper route). If I remember it correctly they built the upper deck that season as well. I remember when that went up we couldn't see the clock. Months later they added tvs of the clock. I also remember us getting raped of our WHA talent we were able to keep 2 forwards and 2 goalies for our WHA championship team. We definitely have a better team starting out than in 1979. Really exciting time.

I cant wait for the official party. I hope its huge!! I actually took a $500 advance off of my Royal Bank Student Visa to donate at the time. I was just getting out of University in the spring of 1995 and $500 was a paycheque for me back then (security guard at the Richardson Building). Full circle - last Friday I used my Visa to put four $1000 deposits down on our four season tickets. That's just a little bit more than a paycheque though! ;D m.

Hull was on his last legs,he retired in the Jets last year in the WHA after only 4 games, believe he had money prob's thats why he came back. Hedberg and Nillson left to the Rangers before the last WHA season. Off the top of my head I cant remember who they kept, but its believed backroom deals were made with teams ,so the Jets would not try and keep certain players. As far as ppl saying the team was raped of their players,IMO it was the right thing to do returning the players to the teams that had their NHL rights.Imagine if the Flames had Temmu on their team and played in some other league and came to the NHL and he scored 76,we would be crying and bitching cause he's are draft choice and we hold his playing rights for the NHL.

We protected Morris Lukowich and Scott Campbell. Goalie, I can't remember. Was it Gary "Suitcase" Smith? Lukowich, who scored the first Jets goal in the NHL had a few good seasons for the Jets and was always a fan favorite (my favorite for sure), but I don't think Campbell ever saw the ice as a Jet in the NHL as he developed serious asthma problems the summer of our first season. Did i remember this correctly?
EDIT: i just read that Campbell did play one full season for the Jets and asked to be traded because of his asthma.

Which seems to fly in the face of 'the NHL raped the Jets'. We could have protected a couple of better players but didn't. I'm liking our re-entry into the NHL better. I feel like we're honoured guests! m.
