There’s been a buzz around Atlanta the past week or two about the mysterious Balkan, an unknown potential investor that’s looking to purchase the Atlanta Hawks, Atlanta Thrashers and the operating rights to Philips Arena from the Atlanta Spirit.
This mysterious persona has taken almost a God-like persona around the popular microblogging social networking site Twitter.
Yes, folks. That same Twitter, which has been credited with possibly causing the revolution in Egypt and the runaway trainwreck Charlie Sheen hype machine, may have a NEW rock star in “the Balkan.”
“The Balkan” was named by the 680 The Fan Buck & Kincade Show after a character on General Hospital.
The buzz on Twitter is that the Balkan is a nefarious mercenary trying to possibly save the Atlanta Thrashers from going to the wintery city of Winnipeg.
Winnipeg lost its hockey team in 1996 as the team departed for the deserts of Phoenix, Arizona.
“The Balkan” is looking to possibly wrestle away the Thrashers away from the Atlanta Spirit.
Winnipeg’s True North Sports and Entertainment, a conglomerate that operates the AHL’s Manitoba Moose is reportedly offering $110 million plus a hefty $60 million relocation fee to take the team to Canada.
Journalists claim that this company is headed by David Thomson and Mark Chipman. Thomson is a mysterious billionaire that owns a stake in information company Thomson/Reuters – a company with over 55,000 employees. Thomson is one of the richest men in the world, with an estimated net worth of over $23 billion.
True North Sports and Entertainment looks to be unsuccessful to lure the Phoenix Coyotes back to their metropolitan area of 750,000 as the City of Glendale forwarded $25 million to the Coyotes in a controversial deal that would ship the team back up north to wintery Winnipeg.
Can the ice-cold Balkan wrestle control of the Hawks, Thrashers and the arena away from Spirit co-owner Bruce Levenson and Thrashers President Don Waddell? And what about that other co-owner Michael Gearon, Jr.? He says he wants to be involved in the team, but does he really?
Find out who may win what could be a race between God and the devil to save the Thrashers from bolting town to cold wintery Winnipeg.
Will it be the ice-cold Balkan? Will he save the team from leaving the sometimes red-hot town of Atlanta – a metropolitan area of over 5.6 million people and the home to 14 Fortune 500 companies, including Atlanta’s own Coke and Home Depot?
Or could True North Sports and Entertainment lure the team back to wintery Winnipeg, a city 1/7th the size of Atlanta?
And what will NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman’s role be in the entire thing?
Will the Thrashers leave? Or won’t they? And what about the Hawks and Thrashers?
Does NBA Commisioner David Stern have a role? Really?
Look for a lot of intrigue and more as things continue to heat up in Hotlanta.
