BRIEFLY: The Montreal Canadiens are expected to sign defence prospect Alexei Yemelin next week, according to Le Journal de Montreal. Yemelin, 25, the Habs' second-round draft pick in 2004, is playing for Russia at the world championship where he is expected to meet with Canadiens general manager Pierre Gauthier ... Milan Hejduk has signed a one-year contract to stay with the Colorado Avalanche. The 35-year-old forward has had 11 consecutive 20-goal seasons in Colorado. Hejduk played in 71 games last season, scoring 22 goals, including 10 on the power play ... The Columbus Blue Jackets lost a staggering $25 million this past season, after losing $14 million each of the previous two seasons, the Dispatch reports. If this continues, get the relocation rumours ready. Maybe the Thrashers, Coyotes and Blue Jackets will end up fighting over Winnipeg.

When the Jackets start to actually win some games the fans will come out, there just sick of losing teams, plus Florida would move first before Columbus

NHL is a tough business. Even Minnesota reported a loss this year.

While its not going to happen - the nhl should consider contracting some teams and moving others to canada - the US just doesn't love hockey like we do.

I always thought Columbus was a weird choice. I can understand wanting to be in Ohio but there were better choices. Columbus is a College town/city and OSU pretty much dominates the sports landscape there.
With the Big 10 starting a Hockey League I can see the Blue jackets suffering.

You'd think they would of went to Cleveland...Why Colombus...

You'd think they would of went to Cleveland...Why Colombus... They were probably thinking along the lines of the model they have in San Jose...a decent size city where the NHL is its only pro league. Columbus could have been viewed similarly, although yeah, it is a big college town. Metro-wise, it's roughly as big as Cincinnati, and about half the size of Cleveland. Columbus has actually been growing while Cincinnati and Cleveland have been losing population. Both Cincinnati and Cleveland have major sports teams, so Columbus could have had nice little niche with the NHL. Probably would have worked out much better if not for the fact that they've never been very good on ice.

While its not going to happen - the nhl should consider contracting some teams and moving others to canada - the US just doesn't love hockey like we do. US loves hockey as long as their team has a bona fide superstar on it Pittsburgh , Washington etc.. even Nashville is gaining momentum and why not because of Mike Fisher, but because Mike Fisher the hockey player is married to Carrie Underwood and we all know Carrie Underwoods popularity in nashville if the big names come..........they will follow best way to increase popularity in a dead market get them a superstar to sell tickets and get popularity in the team. of course, with Phoenix going another year with uncertainty, you known management will ahve very little breathing space and will end up losing much of their talent to save $$$ very saddening

I'd say Columbus losing money is largely a product of a poor economy and a poor product on the ice every season. It's one of the few American cities on the brink that i'd say has quite a bit of potential. There are at least some people there who don't need to have the sport explained to them. Don't think the Blue Jackets are going anywhere...although if they want to trade Rick Nash to the Jets this summer thats fine with me!

NHL is a tough business. Even Minnesota reported a loss this year. Yeah this I can't understand? They have a pretty low pay roll and pretty good crowds all the time?

The biggest problem for the league right now is Toronto... they jacked up the leagues revenue so much the salary cap is wiping out the weaker teams.
If the league contracts Toronto out then the salary cap will probably drop like 10 million! Maybe it's just hopeful thinking I wouldn't have to watch the leafs every freaking time hockey is on TV.
