This was in Game 5 of my first-round series between my Moncton Mariners and gushockey26's Quebec Nordiques, the Nords came into this one needing just one win to advance to the NLHS Cup Final....my first line had other thoughts.
(4) Moncton Mariners at (2) Quebec Nordiques
1st period
1. Nordiques , Mikko Koivu 1 (Martin Havlat) at 11:57
2. Nordiques , Mikko Koivu 2 (Chris Drury, Joni Pitkanen) at 16:58
3. Mariners , Zach Parise 3 (Henrik Sedin, Marian Gaborik) at 17:10
Penalties :
No Penalty
A very bad first period for me, as I allow two goals in 5:01, but Parise gets one back twelve seconds after Koivu's second.
2nd period
No Goal
Penalties :
No Penalty
Uh oh.... still down 2-1, 20 minutes away from elimination. The drama....
3rd period
4. Mariners , Zach Parise 4 (Henrik Sedin, Marian Gaborik) at 4:48 (PP)
Penalties :
Evgeni Malkin (QUE) for Tripping (Minor) at 3:32
This is why you should never take a penalty in the playoffs, because my first line of Parise-Sedin-Gaborik makes Malkin and the Nords pay with a game-tying power play goal.
Overtime #1
5. Mariners , Zach Parise 5 (Henrik Sedin, Marian Gaborik) at 2:47 (PP)
Penalties :
Joni Pitkanen (QUE) for Hooking (Minor) at 1:56
Quebec takes another boneheaded penalty, and the GPS line makes them pay as Parise completes the natural hat trick with the game-winner 2:47 into overtime, necessitating Game 6 in Moncton). All three goals were assisted on by Sedin and Gaborik.
W-Brian Elliott (MCT) 5-2-1
L-Cam Ward (QUE) 7-1-2
Elliott, after allowing 5 goals in a first-round sweep of division champion Ottawa, has allowed 14 goals in Round 2. However, Ward only allowed 6 in Round 1 - a five-game win over Halifax, the lone defeat coming in double OT) - and 14 in Round 2. Ward still has a better GAA and Save Percentage, along with 2 more wins (Elliott was ejected from Game 1 of the first round, backup Jon Bernier came in, allowed the goal, and got the win in OT).
Three Stars:
1-Zach Parise (MCT) (3-0-3)
2-Mikko Koivu (QUE) (2-0-2)
3-Marian Gaborik (MCT) (0-3-3)
