NDP is for the first time the opposition but does that really matter if the cons get a majority

Wow people are really giving the NDP way too much credit its really just a result of the inevitable loss of support for the bloq and ignatieff's horrible leadership. Im watching Duceppe's speech right now and wow I have to say Im shocked the Bloq even got 2 seats with this guy

Congratulations to PM Harper and the Conservatives!
However I don't believe the NDP gains are a result of people simply abandoning the Libs and Bloc. I believe a major factor in their popularity is that they were the only party that wasn't engaging in smear campaigns and fear mongering over what would happen if another party was elected. It was refreshing. I for one hope all our political parties take note of the success the NDP had without relying solely on attack ads. In four years I hope all we see and hear from all parties is info on their platform and how they will make this country a better place.

Go ask Canada post employes what they were told if the PC got in and who they were advised to vote for, they are just as bad , maybe worse.

The NDP surge was a perfect storm. The realization by many in Quebec that the BQ was pointless, the collapse of the Liberals and the popularity of Layton. But also the critical mass point being reached by the media. The more the media pushed the "orange crush", the more it grew. And a lot of people who dont vote or dont educate themselves before they vote went with "the nice guy".
I doubted Harper. I admit it. I thought his careful, do-nothing campaign would back fire, but it didn't. Their strategic plan was tremendous.
Congrats Cons. It's a great day in Canada!

Oh strongly disagreed people aren't voting for NDP because they are uneducated you should be careful on how you word things... Just saying... EDIT: A lot of people that I know that vote for NDP are extremely intelligent and had done much research before, myself included. My father who works election canada would never allow me to vote for who the media loves, he always makes me watch the debates and read articles about the election. And not to mention what the Winnipeg sun has done for the conservative party... 'nuff said...

This idea that all NDP supporters are nothing but a bunch of uneducated, poor people, who leach off of society is a load of crap. I don't think someone could say ANY of the parties supporters are uneducated. We all just have different viewpoints is all. Each party has supporters that refuse to educate themselves on the issues. Either way. THANK GOD we don't have to deal with another election for a full 4 years. I think we're all sick of this BS election every 2 years non-sense.

Every political parties have supporters who are blind idiots who believe what they want and dont really have a clue its not just the NDP.
Mind you I think the NDP seems to appeal most to younger voters because they seem to be the "hip" party, Jack Layton definitely likes to bolster that, remember his appearance on Much Music? Personally I think the voting age should be increased to 19 for that very reason. I turned 18 early in the summer and worked my first full time 2 weeks right after and was psyched about how much money I was gonna get and when I saw how much I lost from taxes I honestly wanted to go take a dump on the leg building. Mind you Im now ok with our tax rates. But back to my point I constantly hear younger people supporting increased taxes and the NDP but honestly until you have the chance to be a full time member of the working force and see how much money you lose from tax and what affect it has you shouldnt vote. Its easy for idiotic high schoolers to support things like tax hikes when there not getting bit in the go jets go by them.

I know every party does it to varying extents, but this use of "parachute candidates" in Quebec by the NDP is ridiculous. They ran candidates - who ended up winning based on the party name and sentiment alone - who had absolutely nothing to do with politics whatsoever prior to this election. I mean.... an assistant manager at a bar in Ottawa, who's never even been seen in the riding in which she won, who vacationed in Vegas during the run-up to the election, who did zero interviews or campaigning whatsoever, and who has limited French language abilities.....will now be collecting a nice salary of $160K and participating in the political process in Ottawa. That, my friends, is well beyond ridiculous. Shame on the NDP and shame on the voters. www.theglobeandmail.com/news/politics/ottawa-notebook/students-ex-communist-a-cree-leader-and-more-join-ndps-swollen-quebec-ranks/article2008082/
