I've always heard that Phaneuf was going to be Calgary's #1 defensemen that would lead the team through his career. I also heard that he was traded away because of his attitude, and the fact that he was more of a dressing room cancer.
Interestingly, I have just learned that he probably had legitimate heat with Iginla and Regher. Apparently Iggy and Dion came to blows on at leat one, possibly two occasions.
Just before the trade, a irate Phaneuf stormed into the Flames dressing room after practice, yelling, swearing, and throwing sticks around. Iginla, the leader of the team, did not approve and ordered everyone out of the dressing room, except him and Dion. There was a loud commotion, and most assume they went at it.
Also, there was an incident around the same time where Phaneuf refused to drink beer out of a silver cup his practice team had won. This happened on the bus going towards Edmonton. Regher shouted from the back of the bus "Avery would have drank from it!" This caused Dion to throw a hissy fit. Regher did not back down, so eventually Dion maintained his composure and sat on the bus.
There you have it. Take it for what it's worth. Phaneuf was traded out of Calgary because of his bad attitude.

Yeah, there has been talk that Phaneuf and Regehr didn't get along with each other. I think it's a bit unfair to put all the blame on Dion when we really don't know what went on between them.
Anyway, I really don't think it's big deal. Chances are when you have a team of 20+ people there will always be a few players who's personalities clash with each other, I don't think the Phaneuf/Regehr/Iginla thing is anything out of the ordinary.

Yeah when I was at a flames game back in feb of 09 my uncle said there were a lot of rumours flying around about Phaneuf causing trouble. Mind you I wouldnt blame him for getting pissed about that aAvery comment.
Sh!t happens and sometimes people dont get along, hopefully for his sake he is getting along in Toronto

Well Phaneuf has been nothing but a locker room leader in Toronto. I would also like to thank Sutter for giving us Keith Aulie who as a rookie played with Phaneuf as the #1 pairing. Enjoy Stajan and the spare parts Calgary

The Phaneuf trade is why I fear the new Winnipeg franchise may hire Darryl Sutter if Malony doesn't want to move to Winnipeg.

To Phaneuf's credit, he's done a decent job as leader of the Leafs. In the last few weeks he actually played pretty well too. (Alright, I admit it; I'm a closet Leafs fan )

LOL There are better stories than that about Dion. But yes both incidents mentioned are rumored to have happened. (and probably did happen)
