NHL stars Mike Keane and Theo Fleury and Winnipeg-born international star Karl Friesen headline the class of 2011 inductees into the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame announced today.
The group of seven player inductees includes Keane, who won three Stanley Cup rings and finished his career as captain of the Manitoba Moose, Fleury, who won a Stanley Cup and an Olympic gold, former Winnipeg Jets defenceman Neil Wilkinson, former NHL defenceman Jayson More, Friesen, who played briefly in the NHL but excelled in Germany and on the international stage, Flin Flon product George Konik and Selkirk’s Terry Ball.
Builders to be inducted this fall include former Brandon Wheat Kings owner Bob Cornell, coach and scout Don Dietrich, coach and MJHL team owner Ted Foreman and coach and administrator Glen Lawson.
In the officials category, this year’s inductees will be Laura Loeppky and Bud Ulrich, while media additions to the Hall will include former voice of the Jets Curt Keilback and multi-hall-of-fame inductee Bob Picken.
Six teams will join the Hall. They include the 1955-56 Winnipeg Warriors, the 1974 Warroad Lakers, the 1994, 1995 and 1996 Warroad Lakers and the 1983 North End Flyers.
One prominent omission from this year’s Hall class is former Winnipeg Jets owner Barry Shenkarow, who was nominated for the first time in 2011.
All inductees will be honoured at the MHHoF annual banquet Oct. 1
