Phil Housley was arguably the best defenseman to ever put on a Jets jersey. We traded Dale Hawerchuk, the franchise player to Buffaol for Housley.
So why on earth did we trade him to St.Louis for spare parts? Was it his salary we could not afford? Did he not like Winnipeg? Was it just a bad trade (we picked up Nelson Emerson, and Stephane Quintal).

I remember from that time (is my memory accurate?) that Housley said he was concerned with the Canadian tax laws (he is a US citizen) causing tax problems for him (I think he may have had some deferred income plans that were crafted to fit the US tax laws, but not the Canadian tax laws). Also, we wanted to be paid in US$, which may have made his salary more expensive (fluctuations in the exchange rate). Back then, not all players were paid in US$, I think.

I agree about Housley. I was very sorry to see him go. I believe it is not a coincidence that Selanne had his 70+ goal season playing with Housley. MANY of Selanne's breakaways were fed from Housley passes, and Housley would also skate up and join in the offensive plays with Selanne. Housley would use his great speed to get right back to play defense.

Housley was great. He was vital to Selanne's season. I don't think it's fair to say he was traded for bits and pieces though. Emerson had 33 goals and 74 points his first year with us, and 37 points in the lockout season (48 games). And Quintal was a decent stay at home defenseman.
Obviously would rather have kept Housley, but he was traded for decent players.

Yes I think the tax law thing was a big concern for him. I was a little pissed about that but I understood. I thought him and Selanne were magic together BUT he was a Go Jets Go in the playoffs. All you had to do is take the body to him and he would lose his game.

oh, it might have something to do with a larger Winnipeg Jet rumour that has never been confirmed by local media:
Supposedly the team had a New Years Eve Party one year. Housley got "bombed". Mike Smith our GM at the time, intervened, but instead got into a heated confrontation with him. Apparently by the time the two were apart, Housley had said to Smith, "Trade me! I'm done with you!"
Mike Smith dealing from a supposed position of strength had Housley's gun to his head and so unloaded him in a lopsided trade. Quintal's only claim to fame was being in the Adam Oates trade and the Housley trade. Nelson Emerson (easy Alex!) was a decent player who offered the Jets a new wrinkle at the time: a forward who could play on the powerplay point, essentially replacing Housley there. Great upside materialized into a good player but never the star that Housley was before during and after his stop in Winnipeg.
Remember later Housley was traded by St. Louis straight up for Calgary Flame and contract hold out Al MacInnis.

Oddly enough he would play parts of 6 of his last 10 years in Canada after he left the Jets-haha

I'm not sure I believe the "tax" situation since he did play a significant part of his career in Calgary a couple of years later. Was it something to do with Winnipeg?
