Hi all, I found out this week that after 6 1/2 years, my stay in Philadelphia has come to an end. I have a few options, but do wish to move back to Winnipeg. Before moving out here I owned a home reno business specializing in tiling in Winnipeg. I guess what I'm trying to ask is, just how booming is the Winnipeg economy. I have 20+ years in the aircraft structures field, and numerious years in home reno. I know the aircraft field is limited, but do you guys think that there is room for a new start-up reno/tiling business in Winnipeg? Heck if the money is right, and I feel qualified I'd take anything within reason.
My 2 other options are in West Virginia, (which is pretty nice), and of all places Arizona.(oh the irony) If anyone has any leads PM me, it would be greatly appreciated. Even if anyone has any thoughts regarding my situation, just post on here.
Thanks
Mike Whittaker

Winnipeg's home sells have been booming over the last five years also reno's of houses has gone way up over that time. I suspect when we get an NHL team alot people well start coming back and the economy will continue to be strong for many years to come!

Real estate is up 11% from last year, the ave. house cost is around 200K. There are a lot of renos going on still and does not seem to be slowing down, the same to be said of new construction. Skilled trades are in high demand.

With a good add in yellow pages or web presence you will do fine. Not the same field, but last year I built a garage and the only work I didn't do was the concrete pad. I called about 20 business' in the yellow pages/on line (google) and only 3 called me back. 1was too busy and another never showed to quote me. I only got 1 out of 20 to come and give me a quote. Guess who I went with?

All trades seem to be in high demand at the moment, when you come back you will notice more higher ends homes being built and likely more demand for quality tilers.

As much as I would love to recommend Manitoba as the #1 destination to live in Canada, right now Saskatchewan and Alberta are still provinces where the quality of life is better.

You have got to be kidding... You're completely out of your mind saying that! Why do you think so many people are moving to Winnipeg FROM Alberta!

Manitoba is RECESSION PROOF... it is one of the most stable areas in THE WORLD Manitoba has also the lowest unemployment rate in the Country How was Alberta doing when the price of Oil was down??? I've seen alot of people pack up and come back to Winnipeg and Saskatchewan? ... come on man...

I'M COMING HOME!!!!! These last 2 months have been the most stressful of my life. But the decision is made, I'm heading back to MANITOBA! Just a quick thank you to you all. While dealing with all this, there was more than a few times, I'd browse these forms and be laughing out loud at some of the postings, which brought my spirits up.
I'm coming back in time (not for the announcement) but for the return of the NHL!!!

I think Winnipeg would be a great place to move back too... and I think your business will do great. Don't forget, the cottage country has exploded, I see it through my window minus the flooding issue! Welcome home!! GLAD THERE IS ANOTHER JETS FAN COMING HOME

Wow just saw this thread... Arizona? Really?! Isn't that about the worst place in North America for the "home renos" industry?
Anyways, I would truly say Winnipeg would be a great place to be. Tons of new houses being built and virtually no chance of it slowing down.

I would have been heading to AZ for the aircraft industry, but after talking to an old friend (from Winnipeg) that's there right now, I quickly scratched it off my list. Reasons: Friggen too hot, rattle snakes/scorpions/poisonious spiders(not worried about me, but have 2 Great Danes whom are my babies). and no HOCKEY!! (would have been Tucson where I was headed). Looking forward to be back!

Welcome back to you and your pooches (btw, great dog park in Charleswood). People coming back to the city is the kind of economic spin-off that we can look forward to. There are massive changes/projects happening in the Peg right now, and things have never looked brighter.
