It occures to me that even tho Atlanta and Pheonix are in really bad shape the NHL exec. are in quite a spot with this duel action down south.
With most of the media around the league shrugging their sholders when trying to explain what is going on, cant be healthy for the NHL! I am getting the feeling that there is a new era the league is entering. With the economy in the US forcing our dollar higher, thus the corporate belts tightning, takes options away from Bettman that he has enjoyed and may have been spoiled with. Clearly, 15 years ago, even someone with their eyes very close to their nose, like a weisel, would have predicted there would be growing pains for newly located teams, but I dont think Bettman counted on this. I think he counted on a steady stream of suckers to help develope these markets. With far more moneypits to chose from, the NHL has a lot of competition for chumps out there. This absolute silence could be viewed as the calm before the storm where the NHL makes a series of structural moves.
Take the silver bullet Winnipeg is for example. Weather we get ALT. or PH. Bettman is going to have to come up with somthing to say regarding the need to abandon these markets. Yes they have failed, yes they have had ownership problems, yes the fans did not attend as needed, but it begs the question why? I mean we all know why, at least we have our own opinions, but he is going to have to answer why he put them there in the first place. you can bet that after the first shoe drops, that the other teams that are in trouble, will come under the microscope as the markets that are not paying attention to this story, will, once the future is written for Phoenix and or Atlanta. Once there are moves made the media will start to ask the questions from every market and Bettman with be in a shooting gallery.
I think this silence has a lot to do with how the NHL plans to get out of this mess with as little collateral dammage as possible. There is a lot at stake here. The direction of the league seems to have to change. I think it is a for sure Winnipeg is getting a team so that in it of it self will ask these questions. With everyone from Davey Jones too Keyser Sรถze apparently buying the next NHL team, it's a wonder why the NHL has not said anything.
We can't understate the escape clause for the NHL from the COG. There may be conditions that the NHL has to follow that the judge impossed when they took over. Plus the law suits that may develope over the $25 mil that is to cover the losses and any other sumantics that are in play. All this, if not done in a carefull way, can blow up in the NHL's face. I think it will to some extent in any event.
I suspect that there are a lot of sleepless nights in the offing for NHL exec's and there's more to this than just moving a team. It's moving a team to Canada and Bettman having to admit that his plan failed.
Just thinking about the aftermath of the MacCracken
