The title says it all. If Winnipeg does indeed get another NHL franchise, especially the Phoenix Coyotes, who were in fact the original Jets, this only makes perfect sense. On the other hand if Winnipeg gets Atlanta, I could see some room for debate, but if it is in fact the Coyotes, how can anything but Winnipeg Jets even be considered?
In the NBA there are talks of the New Orleans Hornets potentially moving. If they move and change their name, the people of Charlotte overwhelmingly would like to change Bobcats to the Hornets (New Orleans Hornets originated in Charlotte. Charlotte received an expansion team 2 years after.)
I know I am an outsider, but I just feel it won't have the same feel if they change the name to something else. Growing up in the Seattle area, I loved the Sonics and when they moved to OKC, it crushed me. You can all relate to losing your team, or you wouldn't be on this board. Seattle has already said, when the time comes it will rename their new NBA franchise the Sonics. Even though it won't be the same franchise, there is something to be said about tradition. Rooting for an NBA team not named the Sonics would just be weird and wrong. Also Cleveland retained the Browns name when the first generation of the Cleveland Browns moved to Baltimore. You would never know they were gone by the love for their team on the field and its traditions.
I am curious what you all think about this. Hopefully there is a public vote for the team name. If the people decide that they want something besides Jets, then so be it, at least the people will have a voice instead of just some owner naming it whatever he wants because he wants a fresh start. Again, there is something to be said about tradition. Of course the team has to get to Winnipeg first.
