I don't know how I missed this, but the NY Islanders flagship broadcaster is the campus radio station at Hofstra University: www.hofstra.edu/Academics/Colleges/SOC/WRHU/index.htmlWTF? I would have expected this from Phoenix or Atlanta, not the 4-time Stanley Cup Champions of the 1980s.

Honestly I'm not surprised. The New York Islanders are a joke of a franchise.
I don't see why they should get a free pass from being made fun of just because they won some cups 2 generations ago.
You can blame the way they've been managed if you like, but it doesn't change how absolutely terrible their attendance has been for some time now. If the Coyotes won 4 straight cups and then went back to terrible attendance and no support like they have now, would we suddenly say they deserve a team? I sure wouldn't.
Frankly, I think the fact that they won 4 cups in the 80's further proves how badly this franchise needs to be relocated. They have terrible support in spite of a storied history that is recent enough for many (albeit older) fans to remember. Maybe they just need to be moved somewhere within NY, I don't know, but it's obvious that they don't work where they are.

One of the reasons for low attendance is that they currently play in the worst arena in the league. That being said, if the "lighthouse project" doesn't get moving to get them a redeveloped/new arena quickly, look for them to move to Brooklyn and share the Barclay's Centre with the Nets.

3 teams in the NY area is overkill. The only reason the Islanders came into being in the first place was to keep the WHA out of Nassau Coliseum, and that is obviously no longer a factor.
The Islanders had a good run but it's arguably time to call it a day on this franchise... it would make more sense to put this team in a city like KC which has no pro hockey or basketball at all.

Wang is whining that the local authorities won't build him an arena. There is seriously something screwed up with the NHL business model if the only way to make money is to have someone (i.e. GOVERNMENT) build an arena and give it to you as a gift. If the Islanders can't make it in the Barclays Centre, then nuts to them.

That's a good point, I forgot about the fact that the Islanders literally did become an NHL team simply to keep the WHA out of what was at the time a new, state-of-the-art arena. (Being 25 I obviously don't "remember" it, but I read about it in hockey history books). That seems like a strong arguement to me as to why there may be one too many hockey teams in NY. It's a big market clearly, and even a hockey one but if you can't get people to care about a team other than the Rangers than it still won't work.

yeah, I mean you can blame it on how bad their arena is all you want, but is that really a good reaosn for people to not go to games?? I would be a little sad to see them go, and I know they have been bad for a while, but 10,000 people a game is ridiculous. I don't care what they did 30 years ago.

Barclays Arena is not going to be configured for hockey, they've stated before that they will not play there.

I remember that the WHA did have a NY team - THE NY Raiders, playing out of MSG I believe. The first ever Jets game was a 6-4 loss to the Raiders in NY.

The NY Raiders was the exact WHA team that tried to settle into Nassau Coliseum. Nassau County (owners of the Coliseum) did not see the WHA as a "pro" league and told them to pound salt, so they were stuck playing at MSG alongside the Rangers which essentially killed all hope the team had of surviving long-term. The NHL took advantage of this, and quickly created the NY Islanders to play at Nassau Coliseum. Funny side note, they were originally supposed to be called the Long Island Ducks.

If the Islanders can't make it in the Barclays Centre, then nuts to them. You are WAY off on the NYI arena issue. Wang has been ready to finance his Lighthouse Project with a refurbished NVMC arena and build a mini-city to surround it without gov't handouts. Long Island put out a RFQ tender to develop the arena / land and awarded it to Wang's group. Hemstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray and her cronies won't allow the re-zoning according to Wang's proposal. They scaled back what he is allowed to build and Wang now says it's not viable. Hemstead cites traffic congestion as their major concern. I believe Murray wants to keep their bedroom community with majority Republican rich upper crust closed off to any new young Democratic voters. It is a very expensive area and there is limited affordable housing. I have followed this story for the past 2-3 years and it much more complex than you make it to be. IMO Wang should give up his mini-city pipe dream and move the team away from Hemstead to somewhere an arena is accessible via Long Island Railroad. They would draw much larger crowds with LIRR access. Hemstead is somewhat an isolated area. Brookland, Queens or another city on LI. I don't know which is best as I'm just a Winnipegger who follows the Isles. I blame it on their '93 team that took down Mario. Chris Botta blog for all the NYI info anyone would want: www.islanderspointblank.com/

I'm surprised no one in these forums (as far as I can tell) has brought up the possibility of merging teams, in order to consolidate struggling franchises. If three is too many, then perhaps this New York Islanders franchise could be merged onto New Jersey Devils, just as California Golden Seals/San Jose Sharks were merged onto Minnesota North Stars. I would rather see my favourite team in Newark than in Kansas City.

I was hoping Quebec, but it looks like Seattle may be the new front runner.
