This is always a fun little argument to have.
The Jets left in '96 after a long fight to keep them. Some say it was right at the thing to do at the time, some say they never should have left. Discuss.

There was no light at the end of the tunnel. The owners capitulated (will never forget Harry Sinden saying "we will never capitulate") during the lockout resulting in no revenue sharing or cap. We were helpless, our owners were helpless, and unlike Glendale, the civic and provincial leaders were not prepared to sign a blank cheque for a runaway league.
It was the ultimate Perfect S__tstorm of Disaster.
Just like today is the ultimate Perfect Storm of Happiness.

I was in highschool in 1995 and even then I thought it would be crazy for the government to a) build a rink for the Jets and basically give it to them, and b) to agree to keep covering the team's losses. It would have put Winnipeg in the position that Scruggs wants to put Glendale in now. I'm sorry, but anyone who bashes Susan Thompson must think that Scruggs is a total genius for wanting to pour millions more dollars into the Coyotes. Because both women are in the same position - one was smart enough to say no, the other one (SCRUGGS) is a total moron.

When the NHL converted all the salaries into American dollars, the writing was on the wall with a deflated Cdn dollar. The arena was terrible especially the seats in the back of the lower bowl, with the upper deck blocking the sightlines. Those who elected Susan Thompson have themselves to blame, we're lucky we even got the Goldeyes. Living in the country at the time, I didn't go to the rallies, but I remember them distinctly. Like many I didn't realise what a loss the Jets would be for Winnipeg, but given a second chance I think it would be nice to have the hottest ticket in town, and to really complete the revitalization and development of Winnipeg's downtown. It is our opportunity to establish ourselves again as a hockey city among hockey markets.
