^ I agree. They should have built the arena where Portage Place is today.

They'll get it before long. The owner of 4play has run 3 other clubs into the ground...... Its quite hard to keep a club going when its dead downtown with not many people living downtown. Never said his other places were downtown.

@ Ducky You made a very good point. The area around the arena is already zoned for development. In addition they have introduced tax incentives for that development along Portage and around the arena. It will be a very exciting period for downtown revitalization. You provided a few great links, but I have a couple more. www.arenadistrict.com/www.youtube.com/watch?v=7NebihclkyM(this is the proposed site for the Islanders) www.youtube.com/watch?v=53o8Wob-_3o&feature=related(LA Live video) While Winnipeg is not LA or Long Island, it is still very possible to see the huge potential our own district in the downtown could have. Here is an extended vision of L.A, Live just announced today www.farmersfield.com/?page_id=9

Need to get rid of the scummy bars for sure. It sounds really bad but the poor people need to have a different area of the city to be. In any event, the exchange district is a good part of downtown and is improving all the time. Hopefully the sports and entertainment district adds to that. P.S. P ortage Place is the worst part of downtown. Period. If they blew up that building and replaced it with condos or a park the downtown would be way better off.[/b] or with mix-use with office space and get rid of the mall concept with just side by side retail.

I attended Red River College Princess st campus for a year and a half and never had any troubles with ppl around there. Sure there were some weirdos but nothing drastic that would scare me from walking around there.
A couple times, me and a buddy would walk from the campus to Portage Place, and as soon as we would get onto Portage it was bums and panhandlers everywhere. Very irritating.
It's possible to get downtown cleaned up but the problem is, where are all these bums and criminals going to go to once it is cleaned up? St Vital?

most of them are mentally disabled and they should be institutionalized so they can be properly taken care with roof over there head and warm meals, But as we all know the government rather have convicts housed in jail cell than taking care of those who really need it.

The Red River Campus residence is great for downtown. Young people living downtown is huge. Does the U of W have a campus yet? That would help revitalize a fringe area of the downtown.

Does anyone here feel downtown will ever be a fun place to visit again? Or is it doomed for all of eternity?

The city finally has a guy(s) with money who are willing to invest it downtown. There was only so much the city could do. Momentum has been building. There was a wave of construction when the MTS Centre opened and I see the same thing happening when the NHL returns, only on a larger scale. If City Place gets redeveloped into a casino, as has been implied on these boards, there's an extra 1,000 people downtown at any given time. More on weekends. More people downtown = more development.

Downtown is good in some areas. Like I said before the exchange district is really good. A lot of great restaurants and I feel pretty safe down there. Downtown just needs a few more good things to happen and the momentum will be great.

I really think Winnipeg will be turned on its ear once the NHL returns. With all the excitement and than the coming development of the Arena District, downtown will never be the same again.

Downtown Winnipeg is preety diverse. The exchange district is terrific lots to do there and lots of history, its fairly safe to I've been in the middle of Albert Street which is one of the more "dangerous" streets in the district as late as 2am and nothings happened.
I think an NHL team will really bring everything together, theres a lot of potential around the MTSC so hopefully the increased traffic will bring some good developments in.
The statues is actually an amazing idea, I was in MTL this summer and they had some neat things like that around the arena. I can just imagine walking down portage and seeing our teams colours hanging in the streets like they were in MTL.
A few other things that would be good for downtown
Clean up central park, I think this is underway, but Ive heard that the area has some safety issues which is a shame it would be great if central park was a safer place to go.
Bring in more events like fringe fest, my girlfriend and I went to the exchange district for this and it was really fun just the atmosphere alone made it a fun experience.

What ever happens, this is all great for Winnipeg! Adding a NHL team would be included in all of the other great things that this city is recently acheiving. Winnipeg is exploding well before the thought of the Jets coming back. IMO, with Centreport in the works, Winnipeg and trading area might hit 1,000,000 in a decade! There is just so much going on here. Its a pretty exciting time. When the Jets come back, expect this city to Skyrocket!

Oh ya, now we should focus on ripping out point douglas and making it into a provincial park, kinda like Stanley Park in Van. Condo's, High rises and Trees!

And they've already got a Sobeys distribution warehouse completed and a CN rail yards facility relocating there.

That's too bad for us then, what about all that infrastructure they have started on the west-north perimeter. HUGE project!, you saying now that is wasting money? Even with Saskachewan growing like it is, i still think we have the advantage for the centreport idea. Seems like we are always Second to the best economy, first Alberta, now Sask. But Second is not that bad. If the Jets were in 2nd in the Smythe, they would be labeled a good team!

Correct me if I am wrong but CentrePort works for us because we are centrally located and have direct access to the ocean.

I had made a remark in another thread about a month ago regarding what Hendrix is talking about... There is gonna be some stiff competition down there.
So, where are you watching next years away games?

LOL.. not to get off topic but a grocery store warehouse has absolutely nothing to do with becoming a international trading hub. FYI .. Winnipeg already has a Sobey's warehouse and a 2nd one is to be built in Headingly. I have heard that Saskatchewan wants to be a hub before, but Regina lacks major links and distribution infrastructure to be much more than it is today.
