FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
THE WORLD’S MOST FAMOUS SHIP TO DOCK IN WINNIPEG
Titanic The Artifact Exhibition to open at
MTS Centre Exhibition Hall February 12th, 2011
On a calm April night in 1912, the world’s largest ship, Titanic, sank after colliding with an iceberg on her maiden voyage. On board were 2,228 passengers including; titans of commerce and industry, artists and movie stars, senior members of governments, immigrants dreaming of a new life, mothers, fathers, sons and daughters. More than 1,500 died. No one believed it could happen.
Now science and technology is allowing us to see Titanic through the internationally acclaimed tribute of
Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition. Viewed by more than 22 million people worldwide and hailed as a must see, the Exhibition will make its long awaited Winnipeg debut this February 12th, 2011 at the MTS Centre Exhibition Hall. Tickets go on sale Friday, December 10th at all Ticketmaster locations, by phone at 204-780-333 or online at www.ticketmaster.ca.
The Exhibition is produced by Atlanta based, RMS Titanic, Inc. a wholly owned subsidiary of Premier Exhibitions, Inc. RMS Titanic, Inc. is the only company permitted by law to recover objects from the wreck of Titanic. The Company was granted Salvor-in-possession rights to the wreck of Titanic by a United States federal court in 1994 and has conducted seven research and recovery expeditions to Titanic where it recovered approximately 5,500 artifacts. The Company recently completed its eighth and most ambitious mission to the wreck site of Titanic this summer of 2010. For the first time in history, RMS Titanic, Inc. alongside the world’s top oceanographic agencies set out to map the entire wreck site of Titanic with the hopes of raising the Ship virtually for future generations. MTS Centre Exhibition Hall will be the first North American venue to showcase video and images from this incredible undertaking.
“True North Sports & Entertainment is excited to bring Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition to Winnipeg,” said Kevin Donnelly, Vice-President & General Manager of MTS Centre. “With the well-known history surrounding the story of the great ship, as well as the deep connections within our own province, we believe Manitobans will be just as excited to get an up-close, real-life unique look at the Titanic experience.”
The Exhibition has been designed with a focus on the legendary RMS Titanic’s compelling human stories as best told through 190 authentic artifacts, nine of which have never been seen before. Extensive room re-creations, including a First Class Cabin and Third Class hallway and cabin, adorn the Exhibition space to bring Titanic to life. The artifacts such as a porthole, China from all three classes of service, a chandelier and deck bench arm offer visitors haunting, emotional connections to lives abruptly ended or forever altered.
Visitors are quickly drawn back in time to 1912, as each receives a replica boarding pass of an actual passenger upon entrance. The visitors are then immersed in the Exhibition as they take a chronological journey through Titanic; from the ship’s construction to life on board, the ill fated sinking, and amazing artifact rescue efforts. They will marvel at authentically re-created First and Third Class cabins, press their palms against an iceberg, and learn of the passengers countless stories of heroism and humanity.
One of the many galleries will be dedicated to local connections, where visitors can learn how Titanic’s sinking impacted the Manitoba region. In the “Memorial Gallery” guests will take their boarding pass to the Memorial Wall and learn if their passenger and traveling companions survived or perished.
One of the unique aspects of Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition at MTS Centre Exhibition Hall will be a partnership formed with THE MANITOBA MUSEUM, who will be hosting a separate special exhibit in their Parklands Pier that will focus on Manitobans who sailed on Titanic. There were 13 Manitobans on Titanic. Nine of these passengers perished, while four survived. Titanic: The Manitoba Collection will include artifacts from the Museum’s collection to tell the story of who these passengers were and how they came onboard the Ship. Some of these items from the Manitoba Museum will also be on display in the MTS Centre Exhibition Hall.
