Guess what? Chippman aint stupid, and Thompsons worth 23 billion. When your worth 23 billion with a b you don't get screwed, period. There are probably understandings in place that waddell has no clue about, nor should he. If phoenix stays Atlanta moves. I'm convinced. If winnipeg ownership where some cobled together group of like iceedge I might think differently, but its not. Money alone is surely not what it takes to enter the elite club of NHL franchise owner.

How would a new owner lose less money than the current owners who own the master lease on the building?
I think 90% of sports reporters are borderline incompetent. Maybe they should assign them buddy reporters from the business dept.
Edited because i'm an idiot, waddel is the president.

Besides the NHL makes billions of dollars a year! They are easily in Thomsons league haven't you heard that thanks to Bettman the NHL brings in over 2 Billion Dollars in revenue annually?! Wait, you say revenue is different from profits? Ohhh..... Bettman is a tool, time will tell if Glendale is equally as stupid. If they are my only consolation will be watching the towns economy continue to be in the crapper... I'll have a lot of spare time to watch that because if the Jets aren't back next year I'm done watching NHL hockey

I hate to make a negative post around these parts, but seriously... WTF is up with this Go Jets Go. i'm ready to RAAAAAAAMMMMMMMPPPPPPPAAAAAAGGGGGGEEEEE!!!

This article is good news, that's for sure. Chris is right, it's the first time an article has come out and the story has changed from a Thrashers executive. Ironically at a time when the Coyotes may be on a path to being sold (which tees up Atlanta as being gone very soon).
"I don't believe Gary Bettman's going to allow someone to come in and buy it and move it," Waddell told ESPN.com Monday at the NHL's Board of Governors meetings.
"The league's not going to allow it to happen," he predicted.
How long until that changes to:
"We and the NHL tried everything possible to keep the team in Atlanta but there was no local investor willing to purchase the team and keep it in the city."
There's only one market right now with an owner willing to purchase an NHL team and an arena. That market is Winnipeg. Atlanta either needs to ramp up its campaign now or get ready to sell to outside interests.
Don't forget that this is all a game too and the more the owners resist selling the more Thomson/Chipman need to sweeten the pot with the purchase price to get the team out of there.
It's similar to the game that Katz and the Edmonton Investors Group played with the Oilers, where at first it was "this team is absolutely not for sale" at $180 million to all of a sudden they're sold at $200+. Also similar to the game that Rogers Communications is playing with the Ontario Teachers Pension Plan and the sale price of MLSE.
Burnside said it in the article. The Thrashers are worth $125 million if they stay in Atlanta, maybe less. There's NO other owners looking to purchase an NHL team and move it to another market (unless you count Balsillie). As a result, with little resistance, True North could pry the team out for $130 or $135 million. Better than nothing, right?
Well, if they put up a fight, that's the one way to get the purchase price up to a range that they might find more acceptable. They already know that True North is willing to pay $170 million so why not try and squeeze that much out of there?
There are plenty of variables at play here and some of that negotiating is going to be done in the media. Don't even be surprised to see something down the road like "sources have said that True North isn't interested in an NHL team at the current asking prices." Everyone's going to play the game.

I'm not doubting you as fan, just trying to gauge what age you were and how fanatical you are. When the Jets were here, I knew every team in every division and basically 70% of every teams rosters. When the Jets left, I instantly lost touch with the NHL. I have not watched one complete regular season game since 96. I do watch International hockey and usually a few playoff games, but that's it. Without a home team to cheer, and the Canadian teams that do exist, basically turning their back on us and QC, the league means nothing.

I've said this before in other posts, when they left I balled my eyes out after giving my $250 lifes savings to try to save them at the forks. Over the years, I didn't quite understand how (some) people stopped caring about the NHL - I always hated that the Jets left, and didn't know who to cheer for for a couple years. It was probably 3 or 4 years later that I picked up Ottawa as my new favourite team (based on the reasoning that they were just awful from 1993-1996 so they had never really hurt the Jets and were a Canadian team). But as I said, I didn't quite understand how some people could totally stop watching the NHL, but now that I'm older I do. At this point there is no good reason for the NHL to not be in Winnipeg (or Quebec or Hamilton for that matter). It is a business and I certainly understand that, but these teams would make money so it's something more. Right now I'm a huge NHL fan, spend far too many hours watching games on TV and leave in 2 days for a roadtrip to Edmonton to catch 2 games this weekend. But if the NHL isn't back in Winnipeg next season, I'm done watching American's bastardize our game. The CHL will be the only league I really care about.

I think that the NHL has no choice but to say that right now. We may well be getting used, but the Thrashers and the NHL would see a complete blitz in Atlanta if the team is sold now. Look, the Thrashers don't work. The Coyotes don't either and everyone knows it. It's just that the COG is a band of idiots that spent too much on an orphan rink and they are throwing good money after bad. That is not the case in Atlanta. With no municipality to cover losses in Atlanta, investors must cover that and who in their right mind would?
Atlanta is likely ours after the MH/COG Go Jets Go deal closes this year. If I'm wrong, I too will feel betrayed again. It is only a matter of time before Winnipeg fans throw in the towel and so TH and the NHL must realize this as well and make it happen before hopes are dashed forever.

the issue of the COG wanting a "if you leave town" claus seems to be a big deal..... how in the hell can he say yes to that, after 5 yrs he could be on the hook for 100 million beans, am I missing something? ??

Not that I am saying that the COG is smart in doing that but I'm sure they see it as their backs are up against the wall. If they do not agree to terms and MH walks, they have no-one to buy the Coyotes and no tenant in their building. If they do the deal, at least they have have a chance to get the fans to come to the building. "Is it a risk? Yes. Is it a risk worth taking? absolutely. "
That is their line of thinking. WRONG. The fans will not come. The losses will mount. The team will move. Then they are totally hooped.

I guarantee if the Jets come back and don't work the NHL will take the first offer to move the team back to a non-hockey market

Cautiously Optimistic - I hear what you are saying, but I just don't know. The NHL wouldn't want to say that the Thrashers are sold already to True North, because than their meager attendance could possibly get even worse (although how much worse it could possibly get is debatable...), but why would the NHL not be starting to give warnings to Atlanta that the team could move if things don't start to improve?
To me, that would improve attendance if anything.
I have always known from the start of this (i.e. since Bettman said in court documents that Winnipeg is the NHL's #1 choice for relocation) that Winnipeg was being "used" to some extent. The question was always, to what extent are we being used? We all hope and assume that TNSE is smarter than the NHL and would not get "used", which does seem likely, but it's not impossible. So were we we being used simply as an idle threat, or was it the truth that conveniently could be used as leverage in many situations before it does happen that we get an NHL team?
None of us can know the answer to that question right now, but if we do not have a team next season, to me it shows that we were being used much more as an idle threat than as a willing partner.
I certainly haven't given up hope, but I am saying that I'm losing my patience with the NHL.

If one of phoenix or atlanta falls thorugh for us i prepose this to Mr.T. A new league called the " True North Hockey League" ......set up teams in every major Canadian city plus some of the northern american cities and say screw up Bettman and the NHL. I would fully support this new league!

As far as giving up on hockey goes let me say this. I grew up around hockey rinks. My Dad owned a junior team in my early years. I lived and breathed hockey 24/7. Perhaps if I was a little bigger, a better skater, a better shot and a lot smarter I could have been a contender. LOL! Actually I was pretty good just not good enough. Anyway with that kind of history I can still turn my back on it. I mean it's just a game, what's happening now may piss me off in the present but still, it's only a game. If I can get over previous girlfriends who I thought were the "love of my life" I can certainly get over hockey. I moved on and found better, it happens. And if I can say to a woman "I've had enough of you jerking me around" then I have no problem saying that to the NHL. At some point you have to say to yourself, "why should my dollars help prop this league up and why should I let the NHL keep taking me for granted". IMO: the reason they are in Phoenix, Atlanta, Florida etc etc and this fiasco has continued on and on is because they feel they can take Canadian markets for granted. I can't make anyone else stop proping the NHL up so I can only take some satisfaction in the fact that I won't be one of those being taking advantage of.

If we didn't have the MTS Centre, if we didn't have the ownership group in place, if we didn't have an NHL-approved practice facility, if we didn't have the richest man in Canada as part of the ownership group....THEN I would be worried about our chances.
Chin up people.

Bill Daly was pretty quick to retract his earlier relocation comments. I think its funny how hard the NHL tries to cover up all of these issues & pretend that everything is perfectly fine.
Atlanta is a much easier move than the Coyotes. I don't think that the league would buy the team like they did in Phoenix, so if the owners are looking to get out I'm sure the NHL would broker a relocation deal to keep it out of bankruptcy & make it appear that they have done everything they could. I'm sure I read somewhere that they've been looking for a local owner for a long-time now.
Also, there is zero political will in Atlanta to keep this team there (which is the single reason why the Coyotes may be staying in Phoenix).
Despite all these comments, we are sitting in a pretty good position. If I think back to a couple of years ago, there was no chatter about a Winnipeg NHL team; so even if everything falls apart for 2011, we are still closer than we ever have been since the Jets departed. Thus, I remain optimistic. If potential term owners & cities want to take a bath on these southern team, I say let them!
