So, it's here! Winnipeg landed a team in the USL's PDL league! The story was on Global today and a short article was in the Winnipeg Sun. The deal was a couple years in the making. I'm personally excited, any soccer here in Winnipeg is a good start and the plus side about it being the PDL is being able to expect cheap tickets. About it: It's an under-23 league with 67 teams across different divisions. There's 12 games a season, the team will be playing in the Waverly complex. www.winnipegsun.com/sports/soccer/2010/12/04/16425506.html

Soccer in the sub-arctic is comparible to hockey in the desert! At least Winnipeg is smart enough to not bring in an MLS team and throw away multiple millions a season to keep the floundering franchise here... I'm sure there will be sufficient interest in the team to support the level of competition. Something CoG certainly doesn't understand.

Soccer in the sub-arctic is comparible to hockey in the desert! The same could be said about baseball, but we all know how well the Goldeyes are doing. I like soccer, and I hope we have some sort of fully professional team (doesn't, and probably never would be an MLS team). I'm so soccer starved though, that I'll take anything.

The CLS was pretty cool. Checked out some Fury games! I think Soccer could work again, but not this league. no wonder no ones talked about it. Basketball was cool too. The Thunder were pretty cool, who owned that league again? it wasn't Katz was it?

I'm pumped for the soccer team, I was so pissed when the fury left! Obviously hockey is my number 1 sport but I'll check out a couple of their games this summer

with our new staduim, the MLS would work here. no question about it. but a PDL type league?,meh, the local clubs here could give some of these teams a run for their money.

Had to add that the first Vancouver Whitecaps MLS game was totally awesome...so much fun watching the boys destroy TFC, will be back at another game soon for sure.
Really think Winnipeg needs to take steps in this direction, this is a good start.

Without a domed stadium, we couldn't realisitically commit to the MLS season. The season starts in March. The first whitecaps game was this weekend. Could have we played soccer on an outdoor field and attracted fans based upon conditions? Probably not. The season also ends in November, and again, I can't imagine soccer players or fans being too thrilled about an outdoor game in a Winnipeg winter.
That being said, a domed stadium would fix these issues. Winnipeg has a good immigrant community from Europe as well who are very interesed in soccer. I saw that Toronto FC tickets are $50-$150. With all of the other options (Bombers, Goldeyes, potential NHL team), a team might have an issue attracting a large following. All in all, I think it would be cool to have an MLS team.

I really don't think we could pull MLS off, but a league under it would fit us just fine. We could fit in with the league Montreal and Vancouver were playing in (Montreal is leaving next year for MLS). We'd still get to play the MLS teams for the Canada cup and we'd have some competitive soccer.

MLS in Winnipeg would likely run up against the issue of market saturation. USL Pro or the NASL are better bets though and Winnipeg could play up against Vancouver, Montreal, Toronto and Edmonton in the Canadian Championships. Given Canada's rapidly growing immigrant population and in particular Winnipeg's, professional soccer is a pretty decent investment in the city.

In MLS, Toronto got passed weather concerns at the start of the season by beginning with a series of away matches. Which is actually pretty good when you think about it.

Hail Hail! MON the HOOPS CELTIC, CELTIC, THATS THE TEAM FOR ME!, CELTIC, CELTIC, ON TO VICTORY!!

Well it's doubtful that we could make a play for an MLS franchise, but Winnipeg could definitely do NASL. We'd be able to play alongside FC Edmonton. The city could really use a good quality soccer specific stadium. Preferably on land where it could conceivably be expanded drastically in the future.

Personally, I can't get excited over a sport where there's maybe 5 shots on net all game, both teams combined.
But for those of you who like it; this is great news.

Pheonix doesn't have grass or snow.
