Just freaking ridiculous. I love the all the guys with the names that make themselves out to be the biggest fans of the thrashers in the world... then go "woo just got my 2 tickets for $3.50"... yeah buddy, your obviously a real fan! The only intelligent person on there was the one pointing out how pissed season ticket holders must be (all 12 of them?). Words can't even express how I feel about this... just ridiculous is all I'll say.

Thrashers fan "Not only was it a tiny crowd but it was a quit crowd. That leads me to believe that it's mostly freebie ticket holders, in which case the real crowd of fans could be 4K"
This team is in serious trouble!!!!!!!!!!!!!

An important rule in business is to never under value your product, even if it mean that you have excess capacity. If you sell 10 widgets per year for $100 per widget but you have capacity to produce 20 widgets a year. Therefore you are currently producing $1,000 in revenue per year. In order to maximize revenue you decide to sell the remaining 10 widgets for $10 per widget. Good news, your revenue for the year now totals $1,100. However the customers who paid full price for the widgets are upset that they had to pay more than their friend down the street. Next year these people decide to not buy the widgets and to wait until the discounted price comes available. The revenue in the next year drops considerably and the timing of cash flows is pushed way back. You cannot pay your bills. You go out of business or are forced to sell the business. You had made a terrible business decision.
The opposing argument is that selling the widgets for $1 will get people more interested in your product and they will eventually pay full price for the widgets. However it is far more likely that the customers will just get used to cheap widgets and will never again pay the full price.
There is one time, however, when selling your widgets for whatever extra cash you can get is a good idea. If you know that this will be the last year that you are selling your product to your current market. You know that you do not have to worry about your current customers paying full price next year. This way you already have the cash from the customers who paid full price and you may as well sell your remaining inventory for whatever you can get.
Atlanta giving away free tickets will upset loyal season ticket holders. This will hurt them in the future (unless they win the cup or something like that). It is these type of signs that to me suggest that this may be the last year in Atlanta. If we had some evidence that Atlanta was cutting advertising costs, etc.... that would be great to.

Why even buy season tickets to the Thrashers?!? I mean, their tickets aren't in high demand... Unless you were that set on a specific seat...
EDIT: I love how that one poster said "[...] People will definitely not spend 10-100 dollars on tickets to an event they don't think they will enjoy."

I understand what you are saying. But really, if a good team came to Atlanta for a game. Wouldnt seeing them Pwn be cool if it was free of charge?

atlanta "fans". they are ganging up on the STH who are rightfully ticked off. telling them they didnt HAVE TO buy ST's and to basically suck it up. i always heard that the south was backwards, but this is proff that backward thinking is alive and well in the deep south. at 3.50 a ticket, plum coulee could do better. how?.....they would at least PAY for their drinks and food!...lol

Wow! Papering the house used to be done discretely...
As a business professor used to say to his first year students "EVERYTHING in life is negotiable."
I'd say that the remaining STH in Atlanta should be asking for refunds on their tickets, and yet be allowed to attend, to reflect the fact management has capitulated to the marketplace.
Stick a big banner over the door at Phillips Arena; FREE HOCKEY TONIGHT! Slap the sign on the side of a van and give away the tickets in the streets.
Hell, even the Yotes could fill the building with that "strategy".

More giveaways as all through December they are running a promotion with Toys for Tots and one of the car dealers where you bring in a new toy and get two free tickets to a Thrasher game...
So essentially for a $5-$10 toy you get to see an NHL hockey game for free....
Seems like a sound business strategy to me...
(Don't take this as my bashing Toys for Tots though as I not only love Christmas but I encourage everyone to donate what they can to one of the best causes that I can think of. I'm planning on going shopping specifically for T4T gifts later this week and it's one of the things I enjoy most about the holidays.)

Although gving away tickets is extreme, many teams do something for Toys for Tots. Even the Blackhawks, SC winner, are giving $30 discounts on Saturday night games.

I recently got an Email from the Devils selling $59 seats for $38, $85 seats for $68, and $120 seats for $88. Well, it was actually from AAA Magazine, but still...
A couple of years ago around Christmas they had a promotion where if you spent $50 on Devils merchandise you would get a Voucher for 2 free tickets, I would say that it's more of a discount than giving away freebies, it's not nearly as bad as the promotions that they have in Phoenix and Atlanta.
It's not like they gave away free tickets with a 6 pack of Coke or anything...
