Hey all, I'm a long-time member of this board, but infrequent poster. I have noticed recently that Winnipeg doesn't have a sports-only radio station. I thought that was kind of odd, because a city of 750,000 like Winnipeg doesn't have one, and Fargo-Moorhead, a city of 200,000 actually has two of them (Fan 740 and ESPN 1660).
I was wondering if once NHL hockey comes back to The Peg that maybe there will be room for a sports radio station in your city. I think it kind of sucks that the naysayer pulpit (CJOB) seems to have the monopoly in Winnipeg.

We used to have one that started in 2000 i think but they changed back to oldies music it was on 1290 used to listen to it all the time hope we get one back Only thing i didn't like is they relied too much on info from the States and TO not much local

The problem is in Fargo most of the shows are simulcast and don't have the costs associated with producing the shows. There are also a lot of NFL and NBA fans which takes up a bulk of the programing. If the NHL returned it could probably work in the Winter, it's the summer months that is hard to get the revenue. The split of programing would be 65% Hockey, 15% CFL, 10% NFL and 10% other.

I'm wondering moreso about TV rights. Back in the day, the best we could hope for was a rare appearance on HNIC and occasionally on CKND! Would Sportsnet broadcast most of the new Jets games? TSN? A local station?

I thought that was kind of odd, because a city of 750,000 like Winnipeg doesn't have one, and Fargo-Moorhead, a city of 200,000 actually has two of them (Fan 740 and ESPN 1660). I was wondering if once NHL hockey comes back to The Peg that maybe there will be room for a sports radio station in your city. I think it kind of sucks that the naysayer pulpit (CJOB) seems to have the monopoly in Winnipeg. CJOB has long dominated the ratings and the local sports scene. They have had the exclusive rights to the Blue Bombers and Moose (and before that, the Jets) for ages. Because of their exclusive rights, they have the best sports shows (coaches show, various call-in shows, etc.). It would cost a start-up a fortune to steal away the rights to local sports teams. There was a sports station for a while about a decade ago as a part of a national network (TEAM 1290), but it relied largely on U.S. content. While many Winnipeggers are obviously interested in the NHL and to a lesser extent the NFL, there is not nearly as much interest in other American sports like the NBA and MLB. There is hardly any interest in NASCAR and NCAA, both staples of U.S. sports radio programming. The moment the ESPN guys start talking about ACC basketball, Winnipeg listeners tune out. I wouldn't worry about the absence of sports radio here. If CJOB keeps the rights to hockey, they will bump up their sports programming and become a de-facto news/sports station. If someone else steals the NHL radio rights away, they can build a new sports radio station around it. (And for the record, CJOB was the single biggest Jets booster in town back in the 1990s. They will get back on the bandwagon in a big way when the time comes.)
