lfpress.ca/newsstand/Sports/OtherSports/2009/09/14/10885956-sun.htmlMon, September 14, 2009 By STEVE SIMMONS, SUN MEDIA Don't look now, but there is another Phoenix Coyotes situation on the National Hockey League horizon. The Florida Panthers were supposed to be sold this summer, but no deal was ever agreed to with the difficult owner, Alan Cohen, and those who know the situation best wonder what comes next. The current owners clearly want out. They didn't even bother to replace Jacques Martin as general manager this summer. They are operating on a shoestring budget and rumblings are the owners may consider abandoning ship if need be. This isn't the kind of news the NHL wants to hear as another season is about to begin, especially considering what this summer in bankruptcy court has been like for the league. Make no mistake, the trouble is there, even if commissioner Gary Bettman won't admit it. But then, this past winter he wouldn't say anything was wrong in Phoenix either.

Gotta love it. The NHL will come to Winnipeg when they need us not when we want them. This has been my stance from day one.

Just as Darren predicted, oh about 6 months ago or so, I think the line was "The flood gates are about to open"

Who couldn't predict that. Horrible economy (past 2 years) + no fan base = re-location.

What are you talking about Jaylon. That's almost as funny as suggesting that a Winnipeg group should have put in a bid for the Coyotes.

The Panthers and the Yotes are 2 different situations and to compare them is just crazy. No way is Cohen going bankrupt. He is a heavy hitter when it comes to cash and equity. He is selling the team but there are issues with a public company buying but they are still working it. Not to mention the arena and land that comes with the Panthers. The reason why they did not replace GM was it can inhibit a sale. let the new guys do it.
The yotes and Moyes had cash issues and file bankruptsy to cash in on Balsillie.
This is just bad journalism to get people all worked up.

Cohen may be fithy stinking rich...but the separate stand alone corporate entity called "The Florida Panthers" loses money every single year they are in operation. There comes a point in time where the ownership of that entity must decide if they wish to keep funding those losses or sell. When no-one steps up to buy...alternative decisions are made...and in Florida's case, bankruptcy may be the "out" that Cohen explores...if it suits his needs best.

This has been my stance from day one. don't get your hopes too high.... the american lead BOG will block all relocation moves to canada... WHA, I agree that the NHL looks favourably on Winnipeg only when they need us. I suggest they have already realized this. Now it just comes down to pulling out all the stops in the failed markets. Failing that, Winnipeg will get the call as there aren't that many "ports of call" left for the NHL to "experiment" with. Jaylon, If you have a source for this comment you have made several times on various threads, please post. I have spent countless hours looking into NHL BOG comments regarding the NHL returning to Manitoba and found only positive messages from only a handful of teams. (Any and all can be found on myNHLincludesWinnipeg.com) Because there is so little information to draw any conclusions, I looked to see what each team would stand to gain or lose if a failed team were to be transferred to Winnipeg. I took the time to write a 2-part blog on this last November. You and others might appreciate how the Board MAY vote on this issue, when it all comes down to the almighty dollar in the end, principally via revenue sharing dollars.
