The insane stupidity of the NHL continues to amaze me.
While I'm happy that Winnipeg is back in after campaigning for it on and off since 2002, imho it should have been Phoenix that should have moved back.
PHX has shown it is not a hockey market, Atlanta didn't go belly up, Phoenix did. Atlanta had both the NHL and ECHL for a number of years while PHX couldn't manage that.
Atlanta is a major metro area and a big sports city. It should have teams in the 4 major sports leagues. It deserves another chance at the NHL as the last two teams were poorly run and marketed. Yet they were still able to have decent attendance, and would be what Carolina is today had they had a decent team.
If there was any team the NHL should have run it should have been Atlanta while PHX was allowed to go back home to the peg, a move that was a disaster that only fools couldn't see how it would end up. the Jets should not have left Winnipeg, period, and it's a shame that the efforts to save it didn't happen then.
Winnipeg and it's fans are not to blame, they did everything right, and I would hope that most people on here would have preferred PHX over Atlanta. However, the beggars can't be choosers, and the league has put the new team on a short lease to say the least by keeping it in the same division for a season.
The NHL under Butthead are to blame, by protecting a team that is all but dead, and stepping in to save other lesser markets like Nashville, but throwing a big sports market like Atlanta under the bus, thus damaging the league in the long term.
The ownership in Atlanta is also to blame because they didn't do much of anything to ensure the teams success in the city. The city's government is to blame for not drawing attention to the cause or helping, nor looking to use it's corporate muscle to keep the team in Atlanta.
The NHL BOGs, by unanimous agreement, have signed the death warrants on various southern teams. I don't think that the NHL BOG vote would have stopped the move or sale, but I;m surprised that it wasn't a closer vote than it was.
I hope that, and will campaign for, the NHL returns to Atlanta someday soon (maybe Phoenix will relocate there?) and rep the success the last two teams failed to achieve here, cuz I do think Atlanta should be in the NHL and be successful as a city with all 4 pro teams. Phoenix has shown it is not that kind of city, as it is nothing more than a sub of LA in the middle of no where, and at best should be an AHL city.
The NHL is highly corrupt, and I hope a strong leader comes in after Butthead, and corrects the big mess he has left the league in.
Anyway, that's my 2 cents. I wish I could enjoy this victory with the rest of you, but thanks to the NHL and such, I can only be glad and content, not cheering with tears in my eyes at the success. Butthead and the league managed to ruin this for me as they have for the last 20 years being the douche bags they are. Such is life.
On a final note: looks like it's so far so good for the new team, we already got the right name, and really the only name that works, now I just hope we can get the right uniforms and logo, cuz I want something that is a passenger jet, not a fighter jet. I don;t think sports should be a celebration of war or it's tools (Blue Bombers being a rare exception cuz it has nothing to do with that, directly anyway), but of transport that has helped our civilization grow. Darren's logo is good, and others I have seen work, hope the real thing has the best elements of all of those.
Cheers guys, and Darren, congrats mate, u did it! I'll do my best to support the team where I'm at.
