There was a post that someone put on this forum some time ago speaking to the similarities of the negotiations with the Coyotes & the fallout of the Jets in 95. It was very eerie how similar the two situations are (goverment bailouts, bad lease negotiations, changing the name of the team).
I haven't yet had a chance to read the articles yet, but I'm planning to do that right away here.
And BTW..there is lots of "city" land outside of the perimeter (St. Norbert). There is also a lot of non-city land inside the perimeter highway (north of airport). I'm dealing with someone now trying to purchase land off of brookside blvd...and they are dealing with the RM, not the city.

Yeah, I took a look at that development when it was going up. I was only looking at of curiosity during one day I was at the track, since I wasn't actually planning to move out there. What I didn't check was what the taxes are and who they're paid to, thinking that was all out of the City of Winnipeg, so it didn't really matter. I'm really glad to hear that because that outside the city thing kinda bothered me since that autopark went up outside the perimeter. (And I feel better now knowing I bought my car from a Winnipeg dealer) . My car is paid for in the spring and i will be looking for a new one soon. I swear to u Mark Chipman if u get this done I will only buy from your guys . Does he still have dealerships? Where do I go? Yeah, his family still owns the Birchwood auto group. I think they have a Kia dealership out Regent avenue now, maybe others scattered around, but I think that whole Pointe West Auto Park on Portage just west of the Perimeter belongs to the Chipman family. I might stand corrected on that too...

Yeah, I knew there were some exceptions and I knew St.Norbert is part of Winnipeg, just as Headingly which is outside of perimeter used to be. I just thought that land went with Headingly when they seceded...but obviously I wasn't clear on the boundary out there. Must get confusing for real estate folks, of which it sounds like maybe you're one.

Ric: heh, not quite in real estate, but I am in financing so I see lots of stuff. I also used to think that Winnipeg ended at the perimeter too. It's all good. Just finished reading the articles, and it sure took me back. I cannot believe the similarities between the two situations here. There were a couple of items that made me chuckle: 1) The original group who wanted to move the Jets to the twin cities said "we are considering playing some home games in Winnipeg" ...sound familiar??? 2) One of the pages has a list of editorial comments, and one of them "I think from the Toronto Star" talked to the americanization of the game which could lead to: bigger nets, shootouts, removal of red line....this all happened didn't they?

Yes nice work johnk,a little history for the ppl that didnt have to live through those rough times.I think I have all those articles lol. The assiniboine downs and all the property for the Ice Plex is in the City of Winnipeg. It is strange since it is on the west side of the perimeter. I have my property (50 acres) along the west side of the perimeter as well, yet south of the river but is in Headingly... then you go south of Wilkes and again the west side of the perimeter is City of Winnipeg. The city boundaries make no sense in the Peg sometimes.I work 10ft outside of the city limit, but im still in North Transcona inside the perimiter-lol

Yeah same here. And then to top it off, TN is going to make sure the Jets name will die in infamy. cut the crap. True north will bring you a team. You have no right to bash anything they do. This name crap is out of hand on here. Appreciate what you are about to be given. The jets left. Are you spending 170 million? did you build an arena? did you invest in the city like they are? they have the right to do whatever they want including make the franchise their own. 100% AGREE!!!!....Lets not start this again, you like threads being locked down Ric??

We try to keep that discussion in one central location, but the mods keep locking those threads. Of course it's going to pop up.

There is a reason for that, so keep it up and this will likely get locked as well. Keep the team name BS out of this thread. I would suggest you PM Hendrix and ask him where you guys can discuss it and keep it there.

I believe all the Birchwood dealerships are Chipman owned. As I've said before in the thread that was discussing the name debate, I am all for hoping that TNSE changes their minds on the name thing. But more importantly, pretty much everyone (no matter what they think about the name thing) loves Chipman and what he's doing for us so far. Once he has brought a team back here he will be something like a hero in this town. I suggest he gets ready for a new marketing campaign - once the Jets are back he needs to make sure he advertises all of his businesses are "Chipman owned" - because I'll never knowingly buy something from one of his competitors again!

I've been avoiding coming here because of the constant bickering about the name stuff that's been creeping into every thread. It's intolerable. Great job, John. The parallels are eerie.

Well it was contained to one thread and thus not posing any problems until some people got angry and childish in that thread to get it locked down... just sayin.

That autopark is paying city taxes? Well if that's true then I stand corrected, not that I was upset about that anyway. I bought my last car out there. But I thought that land went with the Headingley secession... Yes they are. Headingley technically does not start until the road to the new Shell Gas Station. The new subdivision behind the cemetery are also part of Winnipeg. Also there is a lot of land within the Perimeter Hwy that is not part of Winnipeg. back on topic.

We had an AHL team here in Pittsburgh called the Hornets which was much beloved by the locals. When we came into the NHL in '67 that didn't stop the current team from being called the Pens. The point is, a team grows on a community. Whether it is called Jets, Moose, or Darrel Fords, embrace the team. At the end of the day, it is about having the highest caliber hockey in your town....not what that team's name is....

I would simply point this conversation to the "polls" section under the name of the team poll.
No one argues getting a team is the most important thing, but if we all agree it's just a matter of time now until we do, what is wrong with debating the finer points?
