A friend of mine who moved back to Winnipeg from Ontario, went back to work with his old construction company. I am not going to mention the company but it is the one that built the MTS center. (DUH) His boss was contacted by TNSE and the company already has in it's hands the plans for expansion when the NHL returns to Winnipeg. The plans includes blocking one of the side streets and extending the arena.

Didn't Mark Chipman state in an article (Tim Campbell, WFP) a few weeks back that 15,000 is fine for the market and there are no plans to expand?

Yeah he did. Here's the quote:
Could the MTS Centre be expanded for more seating and how long could it take?
Not happening. We might even lose a few for camera positions. Adding seats can't be done. It's not physically possible. We can't take the roof off. Any building improvements will not include the addition of any seats. The NHL likes the building. In discussions we've had with the league in the past few years, size has never been a concern. We have always thought the building is the right size for the market. Our ability to add a couple thousand seats would produce revenue that would not be material, given the ticket prices, and moreover, it would make it more difficult to sell committed season-ticket revenue that will ultimately determine the success of any team.
— True North Chairman Mark Chipman
Of course it's possible he's only saying what has to. Who know what he's really thinking or planning behind the scenes regarding expansion.

Rat, are these plans going to happen for sure, or only if Winnipeg gets a team back?
I guess what I'm asking is has your friend told you anything to make you think that the return of the NHL is imminent?

I guess what I'm asking is has your friend told you anything to make you think that the return of the NHL is imminent? There was no time frame given to the company, just to be prepared when the team arrives back. Now whether that means this year or next I don't know. The plans are in the hands of his boss. It could be that his boss knows when, but is refrained from telling them more than he knows. Chipman did say that they didn't have to expand, but if they do, a plan is already in place to move forward. That is all I know at this time.

How do you know it's for expansion and not just a renovation of a certain area of MTSC?

PCL said there were NO plans for expansion on their table however; I had one original developer explain that there are always ways to expand. "Money can do anything.."
I've shared this info with Darren already.
FYI: This info was given to me on April 1st/2010 during a product demo at PCL headquarters in Winnipeg. ( Just off of McGillivray Blvd )

He also says that he has been taken off the MTSiceplex prodject and is heading the expansion prodject for MTS center. He claims that there will be Skyboxes added, and the roof will be raised to add an additinal 2000 seats..

If this is true then why is it so quiet. If that many people know about the expansion why is it not in the papers yet. It seems that everything is posted on this site days before the media picks up on things. Hopefully all of this is true and it is announced soon. I CAN'T TAKE IT!!!

The expansion is planned in three phases over three summers. This year is going to be press boxes. Another section of seating is being planned at the floor level but not until next year as they will not be able to book concerts while this happens, and third phase she was unsure of. I can not post where this comes from as I do not wish to create unemployment. But it is from a source I would deem to be very reliable. How they plan to do the floor level seating is beyond me.
