WINNIPEG — The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have their man.
Quarterback Buck Pierce -- the gritty but often-injured former B.C. Lions starter – is expected to be introduced at a 1 p.m. press conference in the club’s locker-room this afternoon.
His addition gives the club five quarterbacks under contract: Pierce, Steven Jyles, Ricky Santos, Adam DiMichele and Stefan LeFors – although it’s expected LeFors, who is balking at returning under a reduced contract, will retire.
The 28-year-old New Mexico State product spent five years with the Lions and posted a 21-12-1 record during his time in orange and black. He was named the Lions starter prior to last season after signing a three-year $900,000 contract, but was released last month when the team committed to Casey Printers instead. He exited the Lions’ den with the third-best QB rating in team history behind only Dave Dickenson and Printers.
The Bombers were represented at a free-agent camp Pierce attended earlier this month in California and, sources say, have done their homework on the concerns about his injury. Pierce suffered a season-ending injury to his non-throwing shoulder against the Bombers last fall and has also experienced at least two concussions during his time with the Lions.
Good signing for the Blue, if he can stay healthy it is a significant upgrade. Hopefully he is fine to play, don't want to risk any damage. But this signing makes the Bombers a better team, good to see us have some depth at QB now (Jyles seems like a solid choice as backup and can develop) with a guy starting now who has some CFL experience. Definately worth the shot with Pierce as long as he can play.
Wonder if Lefors will be back? I heard about him maybe retiring. Traded? Kept around on the roster?
