If land is a good chunk of the cost... then building a new stadium in Regina should only be $20 million

As someone who hasn't followed this story at all, is this still the "scaled down" stadium that is planning on being built? It hasn't been scaled down from the original proposal, although there are rumours that some parts of the design might get cut back (like the big arches over the stadium). That said, I'm not sure how luxurious the stadium was planned to be in the first place. I don't think $115 million will buy you a very opulent stadium, even if it is pretty functional.

MLS is trying to put more teams into Canada. Would you guys embrace a MLS team for the 2012 season? Absolutely. Club soccer is much more interesting and exciting than World Cup.

MLS is trying to put more teams into Canada. Would you guys embrace a MLS team for the 2012 season? We could NEVER support an MLS team, the market just isn't here. The only shot we have for a soccer team is the USL which have stated they're looking at Winnipeg. So who knows, with this stadium we could have a shot at a soccer team. It comes down to an ownership (which isn't hard to find for a USL team, it's not that expensive), being able to secure a spot in the stadium schedule (shouldn't be hard, depends on Asper), and what type of turf they decide on. If they decide on Astroturf we don't have shot (the football markings would be on the turf during soccer games), but I remember reading that they were going for natural grass which would be perfect for a soccer team.

Have they started digging the stadium yet? Yes they have & All Blueprints have been sent to Contractors & Electrical Distributors for Tendering. As a side note; There are plans for the Canope & Steel Beams to hold in place. Someone must have come up with the money for them.

I'm all for a new stadium but I wish that for once we would do it right instead of the standard Winnipeg M.O. of cooking up some harebrained scheme which ends up being paid for by the public, and which will result in a half-assed facility.

I'm all for this. I dont care if the province is kicking in for the canopy. Just do it and do it right.
When you consider the land the U of M donated for the project, $135 million stadium (plus land) should be a magnificent facility

It looks like they are taking there sweet time... plus only starting on digging for creating the road for trucks to get in and out. I am worried this stadium won't get built with stories like what was in todays free press.

There's no real construction taking place. It's just window dressing. If the place was really being built, there would be more than one schmuck in a front end loader on the site.
They still don't know who is ultimately going to pay for it and what kind of stadium they're building... what a shitshow.

Some thing seams to going wrong with this development... big time!!!
They were supposed to start excavating the bowl the first week of August, but have yet to start. The excavating alone was going to take 3-4 months.

There is talk now that 20,000 seats from the existing stadium are to be used at the new one rather than the new, wider, more comfortable seeats Mr Asper promised.
I have supported David throughout this, but it is looking more and more like a gong show.
I would be thrilled if the Provincial Government turns around and simply took the original vision for a state of the art facility (with canopy and everything else), priced it out and cut a cheque and let's get this thing done and keep it community owned if need be.
Huge thanks to Asper for driving this thing, so give him the option to buy existing stadium land as agreed to and an option to buy the team by paying back the cost of the stadium at a later date. But this waiting and waiting and cutting corners is absolute BS.
We're going to build a brand new facility that will be little more than a modern version of Canad Inns Stadium. Why does Winnipeg always do this to itself.

Using the seats from the old stadium?!? Give me a break. What next, moving the washroom troughs over to the new stadium as well? What kind of nickel and dime BS is this?
Time to lower the curtain on this circus. It's getting downright embarrassing.
Good frigging question.

Maybe if we had someone other than Asper spearheading the stadium, it could happen. But as it stands, we are stuck with Asper's junk heap (assuming that construction ever actually begins). He is all show, no dough - the Winnipeg equivalent of Ice Edge Holdings.
