Keeping in mind that the NHL doesn't seem poised to bring back the New Years Day classic to Canada anytime soon as it is a huge rating event in the states: If Winnipeg were to build a nice new stadium for football, do you think the NHL would let us run a game in the stadium once per season? Having a home-and-home against a canadian team could be a nice new tradition and a nod to Canadiana and compare nicely to the CFL's labour day classic.
Lord knows we have the weather to have games in there and selling 30,000 tickets versus 15,000 might be a nice extra source of revenue. Even if the extra tickets only cost $30 on average, that is $450,000 plus concessions and parking, etc...
It is not like it would oversaturate the outdoor game market, since according to most pundits the US wouldn't care about a team in Winnipeg.

Until Winnipeg can sell out a Bomber playoff game in November, no way should Winnipeg have an outdoor hockey game in January.

Game doesn't have to be in January... this is Winnipeg after all. Mid may outdoor game would work fine.

If there were to be an outdoor game planned, it should be done as a major event and would require time and money to prepare. I hear it's +12 in Winnipeg today. It's not even April yet and you think temperature in mid May would work fine for an outdoor game?

Ouch, pretty harsh treatment! I think we could host a successful outdoor NHL game, regardless of what happens with Bomber playoff games. Could be in mid November (after the Eastern Final, or it could be in late February. Either would be wildly successful IMO.
December and January would be well attended too I think, but no point in subjecting the players to frostbite.

All the winnipeggers I know have thick skin to handle the cold and any ribbing that comes their way. Would mid march be better for you?
