The Met was such a gorgeous theatre. The large chandeiler and the balconies are what I remember.

I hope they restore it back into a movie theater. Does Portage Place have a movie theater other than IMAX? If not, it could certainly fill a need downtown. I think it's a cool part of Winnipeg's history and I'd hate to see it torn down.

Yes, Portage Place has the Globe, which has been there for almost a decade now....but it was a different theatre for many years before that. I worked there back when it first opened as the Globe, and I still like seeing movies there. I hope they do something interesting with the Met. A mixed-use venue would be great. I'd love to see a concert there. I sincerely hope it DOESN'T turn into some kind of Go Jets Go CanadInns nightclub or whatever. Every time I've ever been in a CanadInns bar, I've wanted to kill myself. They're absolutely horrible. It would be a shame to see a beautiful historic building ruined by turning it into a place where a bunch of drunken 20-year-old whores can listen to Go Jets Go Usher singles.

Downtown has already had enough historic buildings chopped up and modified for the latest theme bar and the 20 year olds have enough places to get drunk. I don't see a need to chop up another historic building for that. Maybe a dinner theatre or comedy club type of theme would suit, but please, not another nightclub.

Also; would you rather the building just sit there....and decay? Well, as a few others have also noted, tearing up a building with that kind of history for a nightclub would be horrible. I'm all for turning it into a concert/theatre/any kind of live entertainment venue (the dinner theatre idea is not a bad one), or even restore it back to a movie theatre. All of that is cool. What I don't want is for it to be turned into yet another Go Jets Go dance bar that will change names and owners every three years, where all traces of the building's history will be erased. So yes, as much as I hate to say it, I WOULD rather see the building just sit there unused, in the hopes that someone, someday, would restore it and turn it into something of cultural value for the city than watch it turn into some trendy monstrosity.

It would be ideal if it were somehow related to hockey, seeing as it is right next to the MTSC...

That fits my description of "something of cultural value to the city." I just really, really don't want to see it turned into a dance bar.

^^^ That's what I was going to suggest, but then I realized that it is already IN the MTSC lol

I think CanadInns got a deal on the Met on the condition that they would restore it. Apparently the inside needs serious work (structural work, asbestos removal, etc...).
I was too young to remember the Met (but I remember seeing a move at the Capitol theatre). I've driven by it a thousand times, but never really looked at it. I think i'll go for a walk tomorrow to check it out just for the hell of it.
I think they should do what Calgary did with the Palace theatre on Stephen Ave & turn it in to a rockin sports bar (Flames Central). I go to Calgary about 3-4 times a year, and whenever I go I always to go flames central to watch whatever is on that day. The place is made to look like an arena with a gigantic HD TV & about another 50 or so tv's around the place.
And the cool thing is, the outside facade & part of the interior have been preserved (they even put a large flames logo on the ceiling to make it look like it was part of the original building).
I think given the arrival of an NHL team here with the new centreventure strategy for downtown, this would be a perfect fit for the met.

Isn't there a relatively new sports bar right across the street from the MTS Centre, plus a bunch of others in the near vicinity?
I'm sure, like everything else that has ever been in that building, the one across the street will fail in a year or so, but I don't think another one is really needed.

That's true...whoever owns that thing (I'm talking about the bar right across from MTSC with the gigantic, hideous painting of anonymous athletes all over it) is going to be successful when the Jets come back, for sure. I've seen so many different signs on that building over the years, though, and none of them seem to last.
You want catch me in there, that's for sure. Sports bars are Go Jets Go Go Jets Go.

Have you even been in 4-Play? If you haven't, I suggest that you check it out. I'm not saying I would go every week, but it would be a pretty cool place to watch a game. I can see football games being great there, and I was told all of the UFC's have been packed. Jets games would be awesome to watch there.
It has a massive screen, many rows of leather theatre seating, simulators, TV's, great food, etc. I was there for lunch to check it out and they were organizing a beer pong tournament.
