Nothing terribly new here, but entertaining none the less!
Deathwatch: The Yotes in suagrmob
The NHL is now officially bailing out the Phoenix Coyotes as fast as they can move them buckets. Should anyone be surprised? Let me put it this way: this year, my 14-year old dog lost most of his eyesight in one day. It was a shock, and we were pretty sad, but were we surprised? No, because he already had diabetes.Where will they go? Gary Bettman insists that the team is doing just fine, thanks, which means the actual situation is probably more like “Black Diamond Bay.” Where will they go? There is obviously not much interest in Phoenix, although many of us knew that 15 years ago. They need a better lease with the city, although the Jobing.com Arena (one imagines that company is doing well) There aren’t really any markets left in the US that are salivating for a hockey team at this moment, but there’s this tiny, prickling issue that Gary Bettman cannot, will not, accept defeat, ever. But not because he’s like Helio Gracie. Because he’s an idiot. This eliminates one great option: moving the team back to Winnipeg. That city has a rabid fanbase (pun intended!) and acceptable teevee market (at least as big as Milwaukee, which has three sports teams.)
What I never understood, personally, is why moving back to Winnipeg amounts to a personal failure for Bettman. Isn’t it just straightforward and easy to admit that circumstances were different in the mid 90’s than they are today?
Michel Foucault always says that believing in the revolution an then recoiling at the revolutionary government need not imply a change in your own politics. So too with Bettman! He wanted the league to compete and be profitable in new exciting markets. Once upon a time, the new markets for the NHL were in the Sun Belt. Now, they are in the northeast and Canada. Gary is still following the money, just like he always did. He can hardly be blamed now that the money is leading the NHL around in a big circle.
