Taman leaves Bombers
Long-time Winnipeg Blue Bomber player personnel director Brendan Taman has resigned from his position with the football club.
The announcement came this morning and Taman will provide some details as to his resignation later this afternoon.
“We truly are sorry to see Brendan leave after all that he has given to this organization over the years” said Lyle Bauer, President and CEO of the Winnipeg Football Club in a press release.
“Brendan’s contributions are immense however we need to respect his decision and wish him nothing but the best in the future. After speaking with Brendan at length it is his desire to step away from the game at this time however that does not preclude future involvement such as Special Projects Consultant in the future if the circumstances are right”.
Taman has been with the Bombers since 1999, when he came aboard along with Dave Ritchie as the assistant GM. He was GM of the club for the past five years before being ‘re-assigned’ to vice president of player personnel upon Mike Kelly’s hiring in December. The move wasn’t publicly seen as a demotion, but clearly Kelly and Bauer, along with director of football operations Ross Hodgkinson, are handling more of the personnel decisions that were Taman’s forte.
In Taman’s 10 years with the Bombers they advanced to the 2001 and 2007 Grey Cups and appeared in two other division finals while missing the playoffs three times. Since ’99 two Bombers have been named the CFL’s Most Outstanding Player (Khari Jones in 2001 and Milt Stegall in 2002) while Taman was also instrumental in finding, signing or trading for the likes of Doug Brown, Charles Roberts, Romby Bryant, Gavin Walls, Tom Canada, Zeke Moreno, Arland Bruce III and Geroy Simon.
