1230 total NHL games 177games below 15003 14.4%(1of 7)
the biggest culprits NYI 22of 41 home games=53% Atlanta 22 of 41 =53% phoenix 21 of 41 =51% colorado 18of 41 =43% nashville 18 of 41=43% florida 17of 41=41% columbus 17 of 41 =41% new jersey 13 of 41=31% Los angeles 9 of 41=21`% carolina 9 of 41=21% tampa bay 8 of 41=19% boston 2 of 41=5% st louis 1 of 41 =2.5%
lowest "announced "attendance this season ... feb 4 2009 Tampa Bay @ NYI 9808
isles, atlanta, phoenix, nashville,& florida do not surprise me.
COLORADO was kind of a shock.i guess we'll see how much they'll support a middling team now that the glory days seem over in denver.
and Columbus has finally made the playoffs, so maybe they are saved by that.
New Jersey even with their new arena and still excellent team is a disgrace.
LA,would've had ZERO if their were only ONE team in the area. but i guess you could also argue that the area does support two teams pretty well.
carolina and TB i guess i can't really argue that they are doing OK.
boston should NEVER have ANY low attendances.
and finally St.Louis only had 1 so i'll consider it a fluke.
this whole excercise was based on ANNOUNCED or OFFICIAL NHL attendances.that's why i deleted all comments throughout the season. now we can all talk about what a crock the NHL numbers really are.
BUT on the same token, even using these numbers (and we KNOW some teams were padding them) the league still can't tell us that our arena is too small.as 1 of every 7 games would have fit inside the friendly confines of MTS centre.when we would only need 1 of every 30.
finally. thanks for not ripping me about deleting posts as i wanted this to stay on track and as professional as it could be (those who know me are probably giggling to themselves right now over the word professional).

Thank you Tom for putting the commitment and so much effort into this throughout the entire season! Great analysis! especially since this is using the NHL's own numbers, they can't possibly talk themselves out of this situation. Two things stand out for me here. First as you mention, these are the "announced" attendances and we have some evidence to suggest a 13 or 14,000 figure may look closer to 5,000 to 10,000 in reality. Secondly, ticket pricing: even with 15,000 paid seats how much less revenue are those teams generating compared to what a Winnipeg team would draw. Examples throughout the past several seasons (and even before the lockout) show ticket promos that make a mockery of the face value of the tickets. Here's to hoping for another "annual" NHL-leaked average gate receipts by team! Chris

Chris i believe ticket pricing is probably the MOST important variable there.as we pretty much know some of these teams are giving away the store to get fannies in the seats. (and it may be why st.louis didn't do so poorly in attendance .

Outstanding analysis viv. Would be nice to slap a copy of that into Bettman's hands and ask him to explain it.

^ I second that. Globe & Mail seems to love stuff like this. Randy Turner seems to be writing about Sunbelt struggles too.
