Anyone heard any news on this lately? Seems to have gone pretty quiet. Maybe just due-diligence procedures, etc. taking place...

not much will happen until the new (for lack of a better term) government is totally settled in.

Bob Irving (CJOB) said this morning that Winnipeg would not likely see another Grey Cup until 2017... However, he suggested that the next Grey Cup game in Winnipeg will be held in "David Asper's new stadium, which I am told is still very much on track."
I have to say I am shocked to hear Asper's name tied to anything which involves spending ANY money!

I have to say I am shocked to hear Asper's name tied to anything which involves spending ANY money! Well, he's not spending thinking he's not gonna get anything in return. Asper wants to build a new stadium in exchange for the ownership of the Bombers and the land the current stadium is on (which is what he REALLY wants). The land is worth lots of money and is in prime retail location. Think about it. The city/province/federal governments hand over the team, the land and something around $40 million dollars. All Asper has to do is raise $100 million (which will come from outside investors, not just him). Sounds like a pretty sweet deal to me. Good luck having this guy fork over money for an NHL team.

I'm not so excited about the location, the U of M?! It'll be good for both the bombers and the U of M. Plus all transit routes going there are already in place.

...and it's the only location he will get any money from the government. And as Razor said, what a sweet deal. Prime property at Polo Park??? Well worth the cost of a Football team.

from what I understand, the latest deal has him paying slightly less than market value for the current stadium location. I think with that in place, it's going to be pretty hard for most people to complain about the financial side of the new stadium

That would be true....if we knew what "slightly less" really meant.

slightly less is my words not theirs. I did see the numbers in an article, Asper was paying around 80% of the market value of that land, I just can't remember the actual numbers themselves. I'll see if I can dig up the article.

this isn't the article I was thinking of, but this is more recent and actually says that Asper would be paying market value. "The City of Winnipeg has agreed to sell the existing stadium near Polo Park to Creswin at market value. The company plans a new commercial development on that site, a development that will subsidize the projects at U of M."www.cbc.ca/sports/story/2008/12/18/bombers-stadium.html

looks like its a done deal..Finally The new home for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers will be mostly complete in 2011, future team owner David Asper announced this morning. Property developer Creswin, the University of Manitoba, the Bombers and all three levels of government revealed more details of a plan to build a stadium along Chancellor Matheson Road. The Manitoba and federal governments are contributing $15 million to the $140 million project, with the province kicking in another $5 million for a fitness centre. Manitoba Premier Gary Doer said the province expects to recoup $19 million of its $20 million contribution. The project will create an estimated 1,468 person-years of employment and $26.2 million in new tax revenues, Creswin officials said in a release. Design work for the new stadium will start now, including how it will fit on the U of M site. Shovels should be in the ground by fall, with the stadium expected to open by 2011. The Winnipeg Football Club has been seeking a new home to replace Canad Inns stadium since late 2004. After first trying to arranage deals for locations at Polo Park and South Point Douglas, Creswin owner David Asper and the U of M signed a memorandum of understanding last summer. But it took several more months to work out financing arrangements. Under previously announced terms, the deal will see the city of Winnipeg sell Creswin the existing Canad Inns Stadium site at full market value, which will allow the company to use commercial revenues to help fund the new Bombers stadium development and a refurbishment of the existing University Stadium at the U of M. www.winnipegfreepress.com/breakingnews/Stadium-announcement-slated-for-1030-am-42321527.html

I replied to the WFP article:
~~~
This is a great day to be a Winnipegger and Manitoban! Welcome to the Asper Stadium!
The good of a Winnipegger like Asper stepping up to the gridiron and investing his cash multiple times over the value of a CFL team to build this new stadium can't be overshadowed by other issues. Yes the governments kicked in to do so. And yes those levels of government will get it all back through taxes probably a few years after it opens.
For those that aren't happy, just imagine a situation where no Asper comes forward and the team is stuck patching a building for decades more.
But I do have concerns that an open-air 30,000 seat stadium has much more limited usage possibilities. Will it be built in such a way to boost temporary seating for Grey Cups and major concerts to 50,000? If not, then we have underbuilt it. This is the key concern!
I do see the problems Asper and the Bombers would have discussed about options for a dome though. In a city that has so many months under snow, a dome would have attracted more events, but unless a retractable dome is provided, football on a summer day under a closed roof isn't the same. It's down right lousy without air conditioning. And an air conditioned dome stadium is no way to enjoy football on a summer windly day in Winnipeg. So unless the governments were going to kick in another $200 million to make it a retractable dome, this is the next best choice.
Winnipeg and Manitoba has a newer air of optimism and "Can-Do" Attitude these past few years and it is so nice to see and be a part of!
Now all that is left to do is to Bring back the NHL and a Timothy Eaton-like statue can be made for the corner of Portage and Main!
Long live the Bombers! Thank you David Asper!
I am pleased with the proposal... and the decision. I just don't like the 'drive' to the new place, being longer. OH well... it isn't like it will stop me from going to bomber games.!!
According to Asper on Prime Time Sports tonight: The stadium will be built with 45,000 permanent seats. Seats will be covered off to make capacity 30,000 for CFL games. Full capaity would only be used for "major events" like the Grey Cup. You have to wonder if this might also include the Banjo Bowl???
The other thing I learned from the show tonight was that every year, some money gets put into a fund so that, if Asper were to go broke or die, the team would revert back to community ownership, thus snuffing out the possibility of the franchise folding or relocating. What I don't get is where this money comes from. Is it a percentage of profits? Is it Asper ponying up some of his own dough regardless? What happens if the Bombers lose money one year??
