Jets Draft Picks

seeing as tommorow is the draft, I thought i would take a fun look at the jets "colourful" draft histroy. a few good picks but mostly oppourtunity lost.

1979: Jets pick 19th Jimmy Mann; could have had 20th Michel Goulet, 21st Kevin Lowe, 35 Pelle Lindbug, 44 Guy Carbonneau 48 Mark Messier, 69 Glen Anderson 120 Mike Krushelnyski

1980: Jets Pick (2nd) Dave Babych. Could have had 3rd Denis Savard, 4 Larry Murphy, 6 Paul Coffey, 17 Brent Sutter, 69 Jari Kurri, 132 Andy Moog

1981 : Jets Pick #1 Dale Hawerchuck ;D Great pick but could have had 8 grant Fuhr, 15 Al Macinnis

1982: Jets Pick (12th) Jim Kyte. Could have had 16th Dave Andreychuk, 45 Ken Wregget, 56 kevin Dineen 119 Ron Hextal, 134 Doug Gilmour

1989: Jets Pick (4th) Stu Barnes could have had, 19 olaf Kolzig, Picked 62 Kris draper but later traded for one dollar,

1990: (19th) Keith Tkachuk, could have had 20th Marin Brodeur

1991: Jets Pick (5th) Aaron Ward, could have had, 6th Peter Forsberg, 54 Chris Osgood.

1992: Jets pick (17th) Sergei Bautin, Could have had, 40 Michael Peca, 83 mathew Barnaby

1993: Jets Pick (15th) Mats Lindgren, Could have had 23rd Todd Bertuzzi, 111 Miroslav Satan, 151 Darcy Tucker

1994: Jets Pick (30th) Daron Quint, Could have had 44 Jose Theodore, 51 Patrick Ellias, 72 Chris Drury, 124 Marty Turco, 133 Daniel Alfredsson

1995: Jets Pick (7tH) Shane Doan, (last first round pick by the Winnipeg jets) Best pick available

For sure a few busts in there...but some good ones for sure!!

Awesome thread dude, I totally was thinkin about this the other day but just didnt want to spend the time gatherin names lol

I hope when the jets come back we focus on CHL/WHL/OHL players...dont bother with the russian leagues and you never know if the player will even play.

I was watching something my bro (Phil Bonomo) passed on to me - something I believe he put together himself (I'll leave it to him to confirm or deny that part) and there was some talk about the Jets trades, how they were made, why.

First off, Edmonton - when they won the cup with Gretzky, said thanks to Winnipeg, because they built their team based on the WHL jets. We gave them the idea.

But once we joined the NHL and had our team run through a shredder, we had to start over, with junk, all the rejects that no one wanted, all the players no one could get along with, etc.

From there, a few years in, when we started getting draft picks we could use, and had players to trade for, the GM and coaches (mostly the GM I guess) were trying to make trades to create a team to beat the Oilers.

They acknowledge that if they had just left some of the chemistry alone for a while, some of it could have/would have worked out. But they really wanted to win - so they would make a trade, hoping to improve the team, and sadly, falling short of Edmonton every time.

I believe that when the jets come back, trades will happen more for the right reasons, rather than for those types of reasons.

I hope, in any case, that that is what happens - BUT - that means the fans have to know that the team will likely suck for a few years - and that doesn't mean fire the coach to make it look like his fault!

IF you get a franchise, and build it with the hopes of building a cup contender, don't turn around after 3 years and fire the guy who has made the awful team look better than it should have looked, especially when it was your idea to make it a team for the future (ie not expecting to win this year)

We can look at several teams in the league who just stabbed their coaches in the back when they ran that exact philosophy...

The fans have to be understanding - I know I would be - I would just be glad to have a team here, and know that we can't win the cup every year - but that management and coaches and players are doing what they can to win as many games as they can - and maybe they'll get lucky.

On a similar vein, if you look at 1/3 or more of the goals in this year's playoffs, they went in off peoples' faces, skates, etc - they weren't pretty but they counted. In the end, the team that deserved it won the cup (though the Penguins gave em a run for their money).

With parity these days, luck can play a huge role (or no role at all, in the end, if you are full of young & inexperienced players going up against a team like Detroit)

It's kind of like - I'm a great poker player. I don't (personally) know anyone who is better than I am. (I'm not saying there is no one better, just that I don't know anyone personally!) But if I sat down with someone like Phil Ivey, he'd likely beat me in a tournament - but there is a chance I could beat him. I have some skill, and luck is a small part of the game. The odds would be against me, but I'd have a chance.

Sometimes that's all it takes to win a cup - having a chance (NJ Devils ring a bell?)

If the fans can be patient with a growing team, assuming the coaching staff is right (meaning we don't want the wrong guy running the team, but if the team is trying, and they like the coach, and he's getting us some wins) then we will succeed.

Patience will be a virtue - Detroit might win again next year, but a lot of those guys don't have a lot of time left to play, and Pittsburgh and Montreal will have something to say about next year's cup finals - maybe even Dallas

Anyway, sorry, I'm at work, just typing my thoughts as I go - but while the drafts will be important, as will trades, we have to acknowledge that they will have a plan - whoever it is, and it may take 10 years to get a true contender, unless we get lucky.

Just enjoy the team when they come back - be glad we have our team back - and take the highs with the lows. They will come.

And so will the Stanley Cup return to Winnipeg for the third time!

Jimmy Mann!

Love the guy for what he did and that was bust some balls, but c'mon, 1st round? We needed a playmaker, not a goon. That was a horrible start for the Jets in the NHL.

biggest bust?
1991: Aaron Ward. He was a early pick (5th) and what did he do? Expeshaly since the pick right after him was foresberg.
No doubt Selanne was the best pick the franchise ever had

Was that the video package on DVD, just prior to the last regular season Jets home game? If so, it wasn't me -- that was CKND, if I recall correctly... Thanks for the vote of confidence, though!

There was a huge selection of talent, but the Jets managed to pick the only flop in the first round for any team...

The one that bugs me the most,Jets 3rd round pick from 84 that they traded to Montreal for Robert Picard.I know the Jets wouldnt have drafted Roy,but still it just really bugs me to see that footnote in draft history.
