Kicker Westwood cut by BombersKicker Troy Westwood's career with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers has come to an end. The Canadian Football League legend was cut by the club on Sunday morning after what the coaching staff considered a poor performance in an exhibition game against Hamilton last week. Drafted by the Bombers in 1991, Westwood has played all 17 years with Winnipeg, appearing in 278 games.Last year, he made just 20-of-33 field goal attempts for 60 per cent, down from better than 79 per cent the year before. But Westwood went out on a personal high note, punting 11 times for almost 50 yards average and hitting on both field goal attempts in last fall's Grey Cup game loss against the Saskatchewan Roughriders. "Troy Westwood has represented so much of what is right about the Blue Bombers organization," team president Lyle Bauer said in a release. "What an extraordinary career." Westwood holds more than 30 team records including points (2,741). He also has the CFL mark for best career playoff field goal percentage (85.7 per cent) and most consecutive regular season converts (663). He's fourth on the league's all-time scoring list behind Lui Passaglia of B.C., Mark McLoughlin of Calgary, and Paul Osbaldiston of Hamilton. sports.sympatico.msn.cbc.ca/abc/News/ContentPosting.aspx?isfa=1&feedname=CBC-SPORTS-V2&showbyline=True&newsitemid=westwood-cut

Poor troy. But I think we knew this was coming his performance has began to decline rapidly. I wonder if anyone will pick him up.

the only thing wrong with this was Troy himself. to "allow" himself to be cut, instead of bowing out...well, he has only himself to blame for that. great career Troy, wish you the best, but you should have done yourself better and left on your terms.

Agreed, you have to know when it's time......... But, THANK YOU Troy for all the years, you are thought in the minds of Winnipeggers now in the companies of Bennett, Kennard, Clements, Jones, Murphy and on and on.......... You are True Blue![/color]

What bugs me about this is that Troy has not been beat by anyone this training camp and they cut him. This proves to me that Berry doesn't like him, like last year when he was benched, in favor of a guy with concussion, after having a perfect game in punting, field goals, and kickoffs. All we have left is an american field goal, who is best known for missing 4 yes FOUR extrapoints in a single game in college, kicker that punted for an avg of 35 yds in the first preseason game. The other kicker in camp is also american but all he can do is punt. Are we going to have 2 unproven americans doing the job troy could do himself? When Westwood did both jobs he was 8-9 on field goals and finished with 48+yd avg in punting. www.sportsnet.ca/football/cfl/2008/06/15/lefko_fall_of_troy/

Berry definitely doesnt care for troy what also sucks for troy is that his last game may be the greycup which they lost but he can at least take pride in the fact that he was preety much perfect in that game. But it is odd that he was cut I mean he missed a 42 yard fg off a bad snap which isnt the end of the world he put 2 punts in the endzone but at least they were long punts (2 for an average of 58 yards) while the other guy had a 28 yard average. Very strange I wonder if troy will try and find another kicking job I dont think he'll just quit yet.

While I do believe his prime is past, I also think he was the best we have this year, unless one of these two Americans step it up. If they don't they'll hear it from the crowd as will coach Berry.

let the guy be retired you guys! he's done....nothing left in the the tank. understand that?.....it isnt about berry, never has been. he was a GREAT BLUE BOMBER, but hes done. and i say "retired", not cut, which he was. he was finished 5 years ago. let him be and let the coaches do what they do.

Now, let the gong show of losing points and games because of a bad kicker. At least it won't be Westwood missing the field goals this time. Field goals and placed punts do decide a lot of games in the CFL.
