O.K.. after going to Monday nights Maidens concert me and the boys were a might thirsty so we decided to go for a beverage... Almost freaking impossible The Tavern Packed, Shannon's, packed, Elephant and castle Packed.. Ended up waiting in line for a half hour at Shannon's for a frosty beverage before taking off to St. James where we could consume our beverages.. Why not open up a Sports Bar somewhere around the MTS Center? after a game/concert it would be packed. Name a really good sports bar in this town? The Pemby? Average Joes? If there was a kick aZs sports bar owned by the "Jets" like something that the flames have in Calgary it would do amazing business.

I often wondered about this. Why not just have it at MTS?? During the third period, they set up more "stand around" tables & plus seating....limited due to the flow out after, none the less possible. Leave all the Beer & liquor vendors open, tune the T.V.'s in the concourse to sport center (or other NHL game on) & we're set. No one would havre to go anywhere. After a few pops everyone goes toward home anyways, so all bus routes are right there.
It would sure cut done on the overhead of a whole other building. Plus who would'nt just hang around?? I guess the hang-up is, when the place needs to be empty to set-up for the next event. (usually next day).....just a thought.

i think that would be somewhat of a hard sell, they dont want to "over sell" to partons. Look at the bombers, you cant even buy a beer after the 3rd quarter. Plus i was thinking about more of a place to sit down and watch a game on a Plazma. There really isnt much around the MTS I'm sure it would be a money maker for the team.

The would be a great Idea, and I hope they actually do do that... I mean, it would also spark up the Downtown a bit more, we could put some LED lights outside of the building

Several famous athletes own restaurants. Maybe Mike Keane would be interested in buying into something? I just don't happen to be elbow to elbow with someone who has the financial capacity to invest, nor to see if that is feasible, based on liquor licences, etc..

Very tough to open a SPORTS BAR, if you are familiar with the Liquor Laws their are several types of licences......
Tavern is a Cabaret and they are required to have 2 hours of paid live entertaiment an evening. the piano on the second floor or that mangy strings palyer that no one listen too qualify.........
Same with Shannon's, E and C and the rest of em down around their........
MTS Centre is under a Sports Facility Licence and the reason they can sell liquor is because of the live entetainment, sports event or other venues.
Liquor service is allowed 1 hour before the event and until 1 hour after the final whistle or curtain but never lasts that long becasue these people want to go home too.
Ever wonder WHY places like ALIVE, BLUSH and the Pal have that stupid band, it because they are Cabarets and they have too.
Otherwise you'd have free standing bars pop up all over Manitoba and we just don't have the licence in our Act to allow for a FREE STANDING BAR as some of you are asking for.
Yeah Yeah, what about the Canad Inns, well those are under Beveragre room licences adn they have to have hotels attached to them and a operating dining room that is required to open minumum hours daily for the Beverage room to open.........
Notice that Hotels also are in the privelaged role of being the only ones to have a retail licence, meaning a Vendor........
So my point is don't you think if we could they would have by now?

Maybe the MTS center could be, or is, an exception? Though they may be limited in hours of service, if it was like the others who can sell booze up to an hour later... But the restaurant idea might fly - it just depends on what qualifies as a restaurant where you can sell booze - I mean, if it meets the minimum requirements/standards, and can sell booze, it fits the profile..
What about the 'attached to the MTS center' or 'right inside the MTS center' idea? There is plenty of open space around the 'edges' that could be turned into a sit down..

So my point is don't you think if we could they would have by now? You're probably right - but that doesn't mean there isn't a way to make it happen. It isn't like the laws can't/won't be changed - especially if the govt in power wants the Jets back, and if the govt sees that profits in a business attached to the MTS center would generate more $ towards a team's expenses/profits... bah, I could go on for a while, but what's the point? It isn't like anyone is going to jump out and do something about this, just because I mentioned it.

I've always thought our liquor laws were reminiscent of 1930's prohibition... I understand that you have to have entertainment to qualify for a cabaret license but I've heard that having a D.J qualifies as entertainment. Have a wicked sports bar that plays wicked music. Or if the laws dont allow it. open up a great restaurant with a licensed lounge.

This sounds alot like the way things used to be at Chi Chi's or was it FINGERS Restaurant with the CJOB Pre and Post Game show, man that was awesome......... And sometimes they did shows from the Trophy Room Lounge....... Anyway, if anyone remembers this you'll see where Viv is going with the idea........

I see where he was going with the idea. Awesome idea, but why hasn't it been done ?
Can't get the space you want? Don't have the cash you need? Not like I can help there, but I'm curious, since it does sound like a great idea..
