One-time Winnipeg Blue Bombers linebacker Tyrone Jones, who won many battles on the football field in the 1980s, lost his fight with brain cancer on Tuesday at age 46.
The colourful and outspoken Jones, who was diagnosed with cancer in August 2005, died in his native Georgia.
"This is a very sad day. However, we need to remember and celebrate the person of Tyrone Jones, the player of Tyrone Jones and the human being that was Tyrone Jones," Blue Bombers president Lyle Bauer, a former teammate of Jones, said in a statement.
"He made a huge, huge impact on this football team and this league.
Jones helped Winnipeg capture two Grey Cup titles during his eight-year tenure with the Canadian Football League club (1983-'87, '89-'91).
On the field, he was a master of trash talking and backed it up with a combative, rugged playing style that made him a thorn in the side of many offensive co-ordinators.
He was a four-time CFL all-star and still holds the Winnipeg career sack record (98) along with Grey Cup records for most sacks in a game (four) and most career Grey Cup sacks (five).
Jones anchored a Bombers defence that helped the team capture CFL titles in 1984 and 1990. He was the '84 Grey Cup MVP and in 1985 was named the CFL's top defensive player.
The former Southern University star also spent time with the Saskatchewan Roughriders and B.C. Lions.
Jones had an unsuccessful tryout with the National Football League's Phoenix Cardinals in 1988.
He is survived by his three sons. Funeral services are pending.
i remember him and James West causing all kinds of havoc on the field. other playershated coming here. the Bomber teams of the 80's never lost at home and Tyrone was big reason for that!
RIP.
