Regular Season Ends; Playoffs Set
March 15, 2009 - The Brandon Wheat Kings brought the curtain down on their 2008-09 Western Hockey League regular season Saturday night at Westman Communications Group on a winning note.
The Wheat Kings scored five unanswered second period goals en route to a 6-3 victory and a sweep of their weekend home and home series with the Moose Jaw Warriors. Center Brayden Schenn scored once and set up two others to pace the Wheat Kings, who finished the regular season with a record of 48-19-3-2, good for 101 points.
This marked the first time since 1996 and only the fifth time in franchise history that the Wheat Kings have reached the century mark in points.
Nathan Green, Chad Erb, Matt Calvert, Aaron Lewadniuk and Brodie Melnychuk also scored for the Wheat Kings, who finish the regular season in second place in the Eastern Division - two points behind Saskatoon - and third in the Conference.
Brandon will now meet the Kootenay Ice in the best of seven Eastern Conference quarterfinals, beginning Friday, March 20th at Westman Place. The Ice secured the sixth seed in the Conference Saturday night with a 4-1 victory over the visiting Lethbridge Hurricanes. The 'Canes will now meet Saskatoon in round one.
Following is the schedule for Brandon's opening round playoff series:
Game 1 - Fri. March 20th @ Brandon (Game Time 7:30 CST)
Game 2 - Sat. March 21st @ Brandon (Game Time 7:30 CST)
Game 3 - Tue. March 24th @ Kootenay (Game Time 7:00 MST)
Game 4- Wed. March 25th @ Kootenay (Game Time 7:00 MST)
Game 5 - Fri. March 27th @ Brandon (Game Time 7:30 CST)
Game 6 - Sun. March 29th @ Kootenay (Game Time 7:00 MST)
Game 7 - Tue. March 31st @ MTS Centre in Winnipeg (Time to be confirmed)
In other news, Schenn won his second straight Wheat King scoring title with 32 goals and 88 points and was named this year's winner of the Capitol Theatre Most Popular Player during the second intermission of Saturday night's game.
Jay Fehr meanwhile was named winner of the Precision Toyota Unsung Hero of the Year during the first intermission. The Wheat Kings fell shy of establishing a new franchise Single Season attendance record with Saturday's second straight sell out of 5,054 fans.
The Wheat Kings attracted a total of 147,218 (4,090 fans per home game) during the regular season, which is just over 1,000 short of the club record of 148,761 (2006-07).
Sunday night, the WHL club will host its annual Awards Banquet at the Victoria Inn. On Monday, preparations will begin for the Wheat Kings opening round playoff series with the Ice.
Tickets to Brandon's first two playoff home games are on sale now at the Keystone Centre box office. Western Manitoba hockey fans can also order by phone at 726-3555 or online at ticketmaster.ca

What is everyones opinion on the devopment of Colby Robak. He has the offensive ability, but what I see him severly lacking is grit and agressiveness. For a guy his build, he is wasteing his talent. In my opinion, if he does not get more physical, all I can see him is playing in the minor league system. I hope I'm wrong, but that's what will happen if he doesn't adjust his play to support his offensiveness.

I see he didn't get the call for Team Canada. Kid has good offensive numbers....any guesses how many PM's he has? NONE For a guy over 6 ft tall he's lacking the agressiveness that he needs. He's in his 3rd year...he should be leading this team, not following..

The Wheaties are on Fire! 11-1 in their last 12 games, and 24-11. Only a matter of time before Brandon raises the Memorial cup on home ice in May. I'll be there.

I had to rejuvenate this thread after quite a game tonight. The Wheats fell to a 4-0 deficit in the first period before the amazing Matt Calvert show reared it's head. Believe it or not, Calvert had a 2nd period natural hat trick - ALL SHORT HANDED GOALS!!! I'm sure 3 short handed goals in a WHL game has got to be a record, but in one period?!? Holy shite did it result in a rockin' arena! Too bad we tanked it in the third after an inside ring off the post. Within an inch of tying the game, but went on to lose with late Hitmen goals. Bdn outshot the Hitmen 43-21! Game 4 (if anyone is interested) is 7pm on Wednesday in brandon...a good reason to make the trek to Brandon. p.s. To my knowledge only Theo Fleury has ever scored 3 short handed goals in an NHL game...but certainly not in 1 period!

Do any of you Brandon residents know when Memorial Cup tickets go on sale? I'd love to make a trip out there on the Sunday of the final (May 23rd, right?).

ok ok. just so everyone knows what you witness tonight was wheat king hockey. this is how they lost to calgary in the playoffs and how they won tonight. first off wheat kings play a extremely offensive style. the problem is there d/goalie. bascially they out played hitmen in every aspect except goal tending. for whatever reason jones has there number this year. in the playoffs they won game one lost game 2 (in ot after 2 questionable penalties giving cal 5 on 3) then lost game 3 and 4 after out shooting cal 82-40. bascially jones stood on his head and it feels so good to beat them in the biggest game this year. anyways GO WHEATIES GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! bring home the mem cup boys!!!!!!!!!!!
