Someone had pointed this out to me earlier today. What teams that have moved and then come back years or decades latter still had the same name?
Interesting isn't it. Now, if/when Winnipeg gets the NHL back. If they aren't the Jets, who could they be?
Also what are the chances of the Jets being the Jets again? I know that merchandise is selling very good but still, Could it be Go Jets Go or something else?

Well my friend, it is true, that whenteams have left, they've adopted new names. However, I think that should be something that the citizens of Winnipeg vote on, and IF we wanted the name BADLY enough, then it would win, as the choice of Winnipeggers and Manitobans.
Same with the logo. If it is decided that the name Winnipeg Jets is the direction were going, then to, they should have a contest on the appropriate logo choice..?
Not to sound old or something, but the 1996 uniforms, with a slightly updated version of that last logo, are MY choices. I simply love our last uniform, home or away.

It's got to be Jets or Moose.
And, Moose wasn't origanally ours.
It belongs to Minnesota.
So, who wants it?
Go Jets Go!!

I would vote for the Jets, I wouldn't want the Moose, We'll give that name when we get rid of the Moose.
As for other names, I would say the Thunder, Pitbulls. Problem is they might choose it to be some prairie thing like the Winnipeg Prairie Dogs. Hahaha.

At least in the NHL, when teams have come back to the same city, they couldn't use the original name because it was taken.
Colorado couldn't use "Rockies" because of the baseball team Atlanta couldn't use "Flames" because of Calgary Minnesota couldn't use "Stars" because of Dallas
I think that's why they've all changed names. I see no reason we can't still be the Jets

i dont see it being a problem with the name. the ottawa senators got their name back after how many years?? im not sure how long it was but it was a heck of a lot longer than 9 years. also cleveland got their browns back too. i dont see it being a problem to name our new team the jets.

I believe that the name 'Jets' would be available for use by another NHL team in Winnipeg. If my memory serves me correctly, I remember listening to an interview with Barry Shenkarow on CJOB at the time the club was in the process of relocating to Phoenix in 1996. He was asked about the name 'Jets' because at that time there was going to be a name the team contest for the IHL team being relocated to Winnipeg from Minnesota. He stated at that the name 'Jets' was not transferred to the ownership group with Phoenix but that the name belonged to Winnipeg and could be used again if the new IHL team wanted to use the name. The name was in fact one of the choices available in the "name the team" contest run at that time. I believe 'Jets' was the second in running after 'Moose' and probably would have been chosen had there not been such a high level of bitterness and anger surrounding the whole situation with the NHL team leaving Winnipeg.
I truly hope that a new team would again be christened 'Jets' because of its identification with hockey in this city. I had followed the Jets from their early years in the WHA through to the end in 1996 and would like nothing better than hearing the name 'Winnipeg Jets' discussed as a current entity by the sporting media across North America.
If for some reason the name 'Jets' could not be used, I think that 'Manitoba Moose' may not be a bad choice. Don't get me wrong, I still prefer 'Jets' for sure and wouldn't want to see anything else, and the only reason I would consider 'Moose' is due to the fact that they actually have a pretty decent looking logo since they've changed it to an aggressive looking Moose this year in place of the cartoon character used since the club's days in Minnesota. The new jerseys they have this year look pretty good as well and may actually look better than a lot of the current teams in the NHL. With the unique design used for the numbers on their jerseys (i.e antlers) combined with the aggressive Moose logo, it could translate into good dollar figures for merchandise sales for a potential NHL team in Winnipeg. It would also follow in the steps of the Jets whose name was used in 3 leagues (Western Hockey League, World Hockey Association and National Hockey League) as the name Moose was used in the International Hockey League, American Hockey League and perhaps National Hockey League. Just food for thought anyway.

The team should not be called the moose. If we get them back, I would be very surprised if they called them anything but the "Jets".

Good point Downtown Booster. Don't you guys ever get bumed when you listen to a sports broadcast and as soon they mention Jets, you take notice but all the long it was the NFL New York Jets. That totally pisses me off, big time.

Oakland got more than their name back when they got back into the NFL, they got the Raiders back. Chances are we won't get the Coyotes back so we have to look to other cities who got their names back.
Cleveland is my gold standard for a city that a league took care of. They got to keep their name and records and retired numbers. (And their colors) Currently the NHL is keeping the name Jets warm for us. I cannot see why they would keep us from resurrecting it. It would be more money in their pockets in the long run to give it back to us.
Many teams that moved kept their names. The LA Dodgers kept their name dispite moving from Brooklyn. The Giants as well. Don't forget the Minneapolis Lakers moving to LA. (Even though their retired numbers from Minnesota and their claim to championships won by that incarnation of the Lakers were revoked.) The Colts to Indy, the Rams in St. Louis and every city the Cardinals have moved to.
However, that didn't happen in our case so the name Jets is very much within our reach if we could just get back in the league.

Shouldn't be the Jets. Ben Hatskin stole the name from the NFL team, which sounds like a 6 year old came up with it, anyway.
WHA aside, in the NHL that name is associated with futility. Only one franchise that existed prior to 1990 has never made it to the Stanley Cup final. Guess which one? Granted, Toronto and St. Louis have had longer droughts, but the fact remains. On top of that, of all the teams that existed before the Jets left town, only one has not made it to the third round. Again, take a guess which one. Since 1978, the Jets/Coyotes playoff track record is enviable only to the Predators, Thrashers and Blue Jackets. Bury that name deep, says I.
I keep hoping that Winnipeg would become like St. Louis was for the NFL. Old Go Jets Go team leaves for Phoenix, continues its old, incompetent ways. New team comes back, wins championship. If it were the Ducks, that would be an eerie coincidence.
As for the name, drop 'Mighty' and Ducks is no worse of a name than 'Islanders', 'Penguins' or 'Red Sox'.
If I had to pick a name, it would be 'Falcons'. Or perhaps 'Aces'. Should casino revenues be used to support the team. I also like 'Warriors'.

So the BC Lions took the Detroit Lions??
Winnipeg Jets took the NY Jets?
Many teams of different leagues have names that other cities possess. It doesn't matter at all.
The Winnipeg Jets are associated with futility? When they were in the WHA, they were considered the best team in the world. No one could beat them. They came to the NHL and their team got stripped of talent. They would have won the cup at once in their first 5 years if they would have been able to keep that team together. It was the NHL whe stole the talent.
6 year olds coming up with names. Go see the Moose, what a silly name. Or perhaps Blue Jackets? Mighty Ducks?
