There are 3 NHL teams that desperately need new arenas:
NY Islanders New Jersey Devils Pittsburgh Penguins
(NOTE: These are the *only* NHL teams that need new arenas)
The last I hear, the "wheels were in motion" to get new rinks for NJ and Long Island... but it doesn't sound like a new arena is coming for Pittsburgh. They will more than likely relocate in the next 2 years. Hopefully to Winnipeg.
I can't see the Devils or Islanders relocating, even if new arena deals don't work out... those 2 teams just have too much history... although why they can't draw crowds with- what- 10 million people in that area? boggles my mind...

The Pittsburgh Penguins have more history than the New Jersey Devils & New York Islanders. The Penguins were established in 1967. The Islanders, 1974. The Devils, 1982.

Interesting...
But I also meant "history" as in playoff appearances and Stanley Cups and Hall-of-Famers.

It will be Pittsburgh for sure. The city has been losing people for two decades, and is broke. There is no money for an arena. Lets all write to Mario!!!

One would think edmonton would look into getting a new arena too. When that happens we won't be able to claim to have the newest arena.
I still believe Pittsburgh will get a new arena, they are just waiting to see what the new cba is gonna look like.

Mario is getting desperate. Time to invite him on a tour of the MTS Centre

In terms of Cups, Division titles and what not, the New Jersey Devils are on par with the Islanders. In fact, the Devils have as many if not MORE division crowns as the Islanders and have only one less Stanley Cup and their last wasn't over 20 years ago.
Pittsburgh on the other hand has been a joke for the vast majority of their history. Until Mario came along the Pens were the least successful franchise in NHL history. Even now they only have one HOFer, (that went in as a Penguin,) and that is suprise suprise, Mario. Their 2 Cups are more of an aberation than proof that they are a great franchise. New Jersey and the Islanders, (until the mid 90's in New York's case,) have had many years of sustained success and the good still by far outweighs the bad.
As for the arenas, I have been in the Jersey Meadowlands and Nassau Coloseum and I can say this; The Islanders NEED a new arena. BADLY. Theirs is almost as bad a shape as our old rink. The difference is that the seating is still very good as the place has been expanded but it hasn't hurt the sightlines unlike Winnipeg Arena. The Meadowlands has little in terms of corperate boxes but they have more parking than every other New York based sports team combined with the exception of the Jets and the Giants. Also, every seat is a good one.
Pittsburgh is a football town first and foremost and that is why they have built new stadiums for the Steelers twice in 30 years. Baseball comes in a distant second but that is still miles away from hockey there.

Pittsburgh has NFL football and Major League Baseball- PLUS beautiful, new, state-of-the-art facilities for both. So I won't feel too bad for them if they love the Penguins. No one else should either... (remember they have another NHL team (Philly) in the same *state* too...) True... However Philadelphia IS their rival. If you lived in say Edmonton and the Oilers left, would you just say oh well, the Flames are still only two hours away. It would be like cheering for your arch-rival.

didn't mario say after the world hockey champ, that he would relocate or sell team if no new arena?and that he has been trying for four years all ready,to get new arena?that hopefully tells me that he won't likely get new arena now.

If we're talking about teams that need new arenas, how about Nashville (if they're still around when the dust settles)?

Nashville has a very nice, new, modern arena.
They won't need a new one for the next 30 years.

Maybe, but they will need a team to fill it more than a few times by then. The fans just don`t care about that team and likely never will. Hockey is a fad in the southern states as has been shown time and time again.
Nashville wants the NBA first and foremost, especially after Memphis got the Grizzlies. The NHL has been their consolation prize thus far...

Pittsburgh needs a new arena badly. or else MTS Centre could be their next home. New Jersey and Long Island would need new arenas if they hope to make money down the line. Isn't weird that in all the States, NY State is the only one where there hasn't been a new arena, stadium in the last 30 yrs. That's crazy. Detroit will probably have a new arena by the end of the decade, since Joe Louis isn't like it was in the past. Plus it's old, built in '79 i think. Edmonton and Calgary would prolly need new digs down the line, but you be seing any of that until they stay in the Black for a while, plus with the new CBA in place. MSG, well, it will prolly be still the Rangers & Knicks arena in 2050. What's another century.?!? AND if Quebec City ever wanted an NHL team, they would have to get a new arena badly. The Colisée was worst then Winnipeg Arena ever was. Yup, that seems it for arena. huh.

Regarding Pittsburgh..for whatever reason, Mario seems to have a burr on his butt when it comes to discussing Winnipeg. Whether it is because he doesn't want to move his club from Pittsburgh, or he thinks that Wpg is made up of "Inbred Jeds" I simply do not know.
Maybe he has not been here enough to gauge our city? Maybe he thinks were simply a cold, small prairie ghost town...? I just don't know. What I do know, is never once has he returned a phone call, fax or e-mail to me.

he doesnt want to be known as the man who took away the penguins.even though they would've left by 1990 if it wasn't for him.

he doesnt want to be known as the man who took away the penguins.even though they would've left by 1990 if it wasn't for him. That team would have been dead by 1986 if it wasn`t for Mario. By all accounts the team was in such a big hole that a miricle, (Mario) would be needed to save that team. They drew an `announced` average attendance of around 6000 per in 1983-84. They had maybe a 3rd of that `announced average crowd as season ticket holders. Corperate support was disappearing FAST and they had a loss in terms of sponsorships that year to go with the attendance shortfall. Never, were the Jets in such horrible shape. As for Winnipeg, Mario has made it clear over the years that he has nothing nice to say about Winnipeg or the people. He only appeared here once during his playing career and that was in 1984 where he scored the winner in overtime. (I was at that and the Jets played terrible that night.) He found new excuses to not be here every year and also did so with matchups in New Jersey, (before they got good,) Hartford, St. Louis and some of the later expansion teams. Mario was and is pretty snobish in terms of where he plays. This is why I wouldn`t bet on him moving the Penguins here unless he sold the team to a buyer who later decided to move them to Winnipeg.

The New Jersey Devils are building a new arena. They have secured a deal with Newark, NJ to build it near the Newark International Airport. Construction is to begin shortly.

To tell you the truth I wouldnt want to see NJ or the Islanders leave, they're good teams and they are where they need to be although they could use a few more fans in the stands especially around playoff time or maybe the fans are getting tired of the Devils making the playoffs hmm.... anyway,I dont think it will be Nashville either although Id like to see Nashville and some other southern U.S teams move somewhere hockey is appreciated for the game and not for the gimick.Ill go with the group here and pick Pittsburgh,it is a team with history but as they sit,the Penguins are in the worst shape and besides Pittsburgh is a football city anyway more than anything else, and I dont know if you can call Pittsburgh and Philly rivals, dont the teams have to beat each other almost evenly to be rivals, how many times have the penguins beaten Philly. We need a team more than Pittsburgh does.Nuff said.
