Because Tkachuk was a restricted free agent at the end of the 94-95 season. Chicago signed him to a a multi-year front loaded offer sheet, ($6M in the first year, this was rumored to be payback for stealing Hull in '72) which the JETS matched (just like this year with the Oilers and Penner). The CBA also stated that when matched, that player couldn't be traded in the first year of the contract. So Tkachuk couldn't be traded. Zhamnov and Selanne were free agents at the end of the 95-96 season. Rather than lose both and get nothing, they traded Selanne and got something for him. They would have probably rather traded Zhamnov, but all the offers comming in were based on Selanne. Trade rumors at the time: Selanne and another forward going to the Isles for Kirk Muller, Matthieu Schneider, and Wade Redden, but the deal was reportedly called off by the Islanders.Zhamnov went on to sign with Chicago.

Hindsight being what it is, I wonder what would have happened if they didn't match and let Tkachuk leave?
That $6million up front was a huge financial burden for the Jets at the time.
Any thoughts on this?

Any thoughts on this? That financial burden was picked up by the league. It was actually the beginning of the Canadian dollar equalization plan. See page 43

Also no part of that contract effected the agreement between the city, province and the Hockey club. The remainder was paid by the new owners as part of an agreement to match the offer, which was 5 years, $17.2M, $6M up front.
To answer the question was it worth it?
Well, had the JETS stayed I'm sure we'd all be pissed if we hadn't. Tkachuk was a pretty good player. He was only labeled greedy after making $6M for that year. But honestly, if someone offers you $6M to do your same job that your making $30K at, your going to say NO?
That $6M got us 50 goals so I guess it was worth it.
In hindsite they shoulda kept Selanne and got rid of Zhamnov.

Zhamnov went on to sign with Chicago. The Coyotes traded Zhamnov to Chicago for Jeremy Roenick.

Had the Jets stayed,I dont think Selanne was going anywhere. This trade was made by Bobby Smith and the new owners was it not?Cause I remember some article at the time saying how stupid are these owners for letting Selanne go,when your going into a new market and then trade a guy who was going to be your top marketing player.

I agree with that from a marketing aspects. But than again maybe they thought Tkachuk was gonna be a superstar and being American would have been a better marketing player.

Hell, if the Jets had stayed, Selanne would have definately been our franchise player, unless something really drastic need to be done... too bad he couldn't have hoisted the cup in good ol' Winnipeg...

Part of the payback from Chicago was the fact (rumour) that the Jets backed out of a trade that would have seen Tkachuk to the Blackhawks, for Jeremy Roenick. As mentioned earlier the Coyotes got Roenick, but for Zhamnov NOT Tkachuk.
