I am 40 years old... have two kids, and I still get tears in my eyes looking at that. What a frikkin shame! The boys there, basically holding up Thomas Steen... it just wasn't right that this happened. What doesn't kill you, makes you stronger. How good will it feel when they skate back on to the ice the first 500 times!! Don't ever forget how you felt that entire year, from the day of the funeral, to the day of the last game, to the day they cleaned out the lockers... and everyday since! When they come back, we all have to make sure EVERY SINGLE SEAT, EVERY SINGLE GAME is sold and full!

I was there with my parents. I was 12, and I cried my eyes out. I can't look at those pictures long, or else my eyes start to tear up.

I was there with 2 of my friends. We rode the bus down portage avenue and I remember seeing so much Jets gear everywhere. I was so afraid that we wouldnt get there in time. I remember them opening the doors and there was a mad dash to grab seats. We got lucky and got seats about 20 rows up in the corner. I still have about 2 rolls of film of pictures that I took. I remember the arena filling up in only a couple of minutes. It was crazy!! The things I remember most are: -the wave going round and round for what seemed like ever. -Eddie O's speech -Don Cherry's speech and of course Raising both Thomas Steen's number and the Jets banner. It was an incredibly sad day in Winnipeg. I felt horrible that day and it didnt quite hit me for a while. I will repeat teemu13's words "How good will it feel when they skate back on to the ice the first 500 times!! Don't ever forget how you felt that entire year, from the day of the funeral, to the day of the last game, to the day they cleaned out the lockers... and everyday since! When they come back, we all have to make sure EVERY SINGLE SEAT, EVERY SINGLE GAME is sold and full! " We now know what we lost and when they return lets never EVER take them for granted!

I was there.
I was 20 years old at the time and what a horrible experience it was. Absolutley horrible. It really felt like a close friend had just died.
It was a sickening feeling.
I remember Steens No. 25 getting retired, Ed Olczk's famous statement that "....and if this team wins the Stanley Cup...ITS COMING BACK TO WINNIPEG!!!"
I remember that same evening (or maybe it was the night before), most of the Jets players were partying at the old Wise Guys club on Rory.
That was a fun time partying with Selanne, etc.

I was there! With my Parents, Brother and Sister. I've always said, to this day I've never even cried so hard after losing a family member! For me that day, the city died as far as I'm concerned & I know that soon enough, there WILL BE a ressurection!

I was not there...reason, see Kenny S's post on page 1.
I cannot accept injustice, therefore I could not accept that it would be their final game and I still cannot accept that they're not here.
For me it was not a funeral...the object of a funeral never comes back... it was the only the beginning of the hiatus we're experiencing now until they we get our NHL team back.

When there is something you've loved as long as you remember, something you've grown up with and all of a sudden is gone, is not a great feeling.
That's what it was for me back in 1995-96.
I grew up with the team from the time they entered the NHL, the battles with Edmonton and Calgary in the 80s, drawing the Jets logo on my school binders, drawing Jets players, getting a signed autograph picture from Dale Hawerchuk himself at St. Vital Mall way back in 1985, buying all the new merchandise featuring the then "new" Jets logo back in 1990 ---- all those things, great memories....and it all got cut short in 1996.
I have 3 kids now. Its a shame they can't experience an NHL hockey team growing up like I did --- but I hope they still can.

My brother and I were there, but we were with the masses that were kept out of the building because of the fire code. My brother popped open the trunk of his car (nice speakers in there!) and cranked up CJOB for everybody (within earshot) to hear the proceedings.
I shed my first tears in a decade that day... Haven't cried since, either -- although whenever I watch video about the loss of the Jets, emotions still run high, and I run the gamut (tears well up, I get goosebumps, chills...).
My brother stopped watching the NHL entirely, and I only watch it if it's on (I don't have a team to cheer for, so I don't go looking for it). The Moose fill the void to an extent, but it's definitely not the same.
I also have 3 kids, and would love to have them grow up with an NHL team like I did...

I too was there. Went alone. It was very sad but heartwarming at the same time to see further evidence that fan support was not the reason they were leaving.

I refused to go - I also refused to go to their "last game" against LA, since I was ABSOLUTELY CONVINCED that they would be staying. Nevertheless, I was at round 1 game 6 just under a year later. Yeah even after they made it official I still believed something would happen to save them. So no I did not go, I would not have been able to handle it.

it just wasn't right that this happened. Can't put it any better than that. Simple, and true. I wasn't there, as I was 9, and my parents could rarely afford tickets (most of my times at the arena watching the Jets were gifts). I am always proud to say that I've seen the Winnipeg Jets play live, at THE Winnipeg Arena.

I am getting ready to move into an apartment and just found an old box full of stuff from high school...aka, 1995-97. In that box, I found an old photo album with a ton of pictures from that afternoon. I'll see if I can get my hands on a scanner and put some of the pics up on here. Almost put a tear in my eye looking at them.

I should have been there but my dad and I gave our tickets away to a father and his young son that were trying to see their first NHL game together but the scalpers were raping people. We figured we had seen almost every home game together since before I could remember and why not let someone else have a memory. My father was a great man. Rest in Peace Dad.

I'll throw this question out there to everyone: I don't remember there being tickets. I am pretty sure it was a "First come first serve" deal... Does anyone remember?

Yes Hendrix,it was a first come first serve deal. But it sounds as if Jetsfan88 is talking about a hockey game and not the farewell I think.

I can't believe I haven't read this thread before. I was there too. I told my dad to meet me at our (he paid ;D) season tickets we had since the Jets entered the NHL, knowing there would be a mad rush. I couldn't believe how quickly 15,000 people got into that building. That was almost as impressive as the save our Jet's campaign including the Portage & Main, and the Forks gatherings. I remember very clearly the rumor floating around the arena that there was a group that was looking at a last ditch effort to save the Jets. I was 22 at the time and embarrassed I was tears, until I looked around and saw my dad and other "older" people with tears as well. What a sh!ty day. I can not wait to bring me dad to the season tickets that I will be buying to the first game back, and then starting that same tradition with my son. I have been patient for 14 years, and can continue to be so for knowing the prize at the end will be worth it big time. ;D

I was there with my two older brothers. Our family had season tickets (through my Dad's company) and we did our best to get to our seats but couldn't(Section 16a Row 15 Seats 1,2,3,4). We settled for North Endzone seats.
"The Dance" by Garth Brooks is forever anchored to that day!
