Obviously; They knew they wouldn't sell enough tickets to help pay for cost of putting in Ice! Who came up with this rediculous idea in the first place? An NHL exhibition between the Phoenix Coyotes and Dallas Stars scheduled to be played in Reliant Stadium on Sept. 23 has been canceled. Stars spokesman Rob Scichili says the game was called off because of the cost of putting ice in the stadium, the home of the NFL's Houston Texans. Scichili says the game will not be rescheduled. Ramon Alvarez, a spokesman for Fox Sports Southwest, said the network is trying to "extend the Stars' fan base into Houston," since more of their games will be televised in the market in the near future. A new regional sports network will begin airing Houston Rockets games in 2012 and Astros games in 2013, freeing air time for more Stars game on the current Fox Sports station in the city. Why can't they just play the game at the Toyota Center?

Why can't they just play the game at the Toyota Center? I'm wondering the same thing.

Hmmm....an outdoor ice rink in Texas. Another brilliant NHL idea.

Houston is actually a decent hockey city. I am guessing the Aeros draw more than the Coyotes. Wouldn't the cost of ice be something to examine before scheduling this? Kind of weird, but whatever.

Wrong timing! They should do it around January or February when Football season is finished for the Texans.... Too hot and humid still in Sept... And second, CHANGE THE OPPONENT! Who the f@#& cares about the Coyotes? I'm sure the ticket sales would be much higher if it were another opponent, let alone one from up North!

Why can't they just play the game at the Toyota Center? Need permission/co-operation from the Minnesota Wild and the Houston Rockets. Probably couldn't get it.

My first thought was why would they do it for a meaningless ex game and not a reg season one.

Am I missing something? How would they have an outdoor game in the south?!?

Am I missing something? How would they have an outdoor game in the south?!? If I am not mistaken, Reliant Stadium has a retractable roof, like Texas Stadium (or whatever the name of Dallas's is now), so it constitutes an enclosed venue. I think the idea was to see if they could generate some fan base in Houston as a possible relocation destination of the Yotes, but given the Rockets owner is not at all interested in hockey (the Aeros are owned by the Wild strangely), and probably the Houston fanbase is not sufficient enough to make this game profitable, somebody pulled the plug...Must cost a pretty penny to install a refrigeration system into a stadium, to do it for a preseason hockey game between two struggling hockey markets seems ludicrous, really.

Am I missing something? How would they have an outdoor game in the south?!? Mexico played Bulgaria in an outdoor game in Zocalo Square in Mexico City at the 2011 World Junior Division III Championships. The ice surface worked despite the temperature... but I heard reports that 50,000 people were expected to be there, but only 3,000 showed up... hahahaha Be it a cautionary tale to overly ambitious owners and promoters who want to ship Hockey too far south! Didn't the Rockets' owner, Les Alexander, come within hours of buying the Oilers and moving them to Houston about 13 years ago??
