First of all, I agree, 20,000 seats is way too big for the N.H.L. The only reason for the large size of the arena is the large number of tennis events.
Secondly, I did not know that the article was from 2008. My bad.

Aren't they moving to the Barclay's Center in 2012?

Haha I wish. But I am fairly certain that only the New Jersey Nets basketball team will be moving to the Barclays Center. The word on the street is that the Barclays Center floor will be too small to fit a hockey rink, which is a shame since the Barclays Center will be located on Long Island, and its centralized location in the five boroughs of New York City (along a subway line, just like Madison Square Garden) would create a true intra-city derby with New York Rangers. If you live in Dutchess/Putnam/Westchester like me then getting to Nassau County by public transportation is a nightmare.

Yes they redesigned Barclays and now it can't fit an NHL sized rink.
